Review Summary: They age like wine, getting finer with the years. Its interesting seeing how far In Flames has come. From their original sound to today alot has changed. This album is noticably slower than their earlier work, continueing a trend that has been arching across the story of the band. Some might describe the album as 'a step towards radio rock' but its far from that. Yes its softer, yes the original sound is fadeing into the background and yes the screaming has turned into a more growled speaking. You simply can't compare any song here to previous work like 'Episode 666'. But thats not necessarily a bad thing.
In Flames has been around a long time. 'In Flames' originally formed in 1990, meaning they have been around for 21 years now. Thats a damn long time and if the sound of a band doesn't change then they arn't 'staying true to their fanbase', they are exploiting a tired out formula that guarantees some sucess for minimal effort. Simply put, In Flames is getting... well they're getting a little old. But not in the musical sense. They simply arn't the budding 20-somethings they used to be. They are mellowing out, and I, personally am enjoying that alot.
It's hard to describe exactly what makes this album such an absoloute rush to listen to. Opening with the Mirror's Truth I was immediately drawn in. The riff, if a little un-inventive, was familiar territory for a metal fan like me. I was able to listen, a little skeptically, wondering what exactly this was. As the chorus burst in I fell in love. The huge sound enveloped me drawing me into a diffrent world. In Flames was a completley new experience for me. Being a fan of 'bad' metalcore and post-hardcore (think We Came as Romans) I wasn't used to this type of sound, and perhaps thats why I fell in love so quickly. Perhaps there are many other bands that sound similar, but I haven't found any. The sound just works. No its not a revolution, but its a perfect example of a band that knows exactly what they are doing. I began listening to more of In Flames older work and somehow it just didn't work as well. From the speed of 'March to the Shore' to the calm of 'The Chosen Pessimist' the band makes everything work. The bassist and drummer lay down the perfect groundwork for Strömblad and Gelotte who take off on a soaring rollercoaster of tempo and melody.
What tends to irritate me is the lyrics. 'Fallen ideals, march to the shore, you are a killer'. Still, though this isn't any new ground, the lyrics thankfully don't distract too much from the albums sound. I feel, personally, as if this album might just be one of the masterpieces of the past decade, not because it has revolutionized music but because its a perfect opener into a whole new direction of music. Anyone who enjoys any kind of 'metal' will surely find some redeeming qualities here and possibly a new direction of music to listen to.

Not a complete sentence.

*That's, *aren't, *"fanbase... success"

*aren't. This would read better as two sentences.
That third, meaty paragraph is missing lots of commas and you should use "" 's and italics for the lyrics. Conclusion is lacking, second pragraph is largely unnecessary. You could probably flesh out the review a little more by going more in-depth about the music or describing another song or two.
Okay for a first review, but could be much better.

Review needs some work. Has some grammar errors throughout that you could clean up. Used to love this album, but now it's nothing more than decent.

I've been going in the opposite direction. The more I listen to this, the more I like it. I really hated this when it came out.
| | | Nothing charming 'bout terrible lyricism. If anyone wants to hear a better version of this seek out "Reroute to Remain".

What I really want to know is how this album made it onto the top 100 of 2008.

Album is pretty terrible. Will be very surprised if the new one will be any better. Review needs grammatical changes, but it's pretty decent.

Harsh. Dawg its not that bad, people just give it lower ratings because of a) fame and b) scene-kids

The Chosen Pessimist is a great song though.

"This album is a boring, sellout piece of shit for teenagers."
What a closed minded, stupid comment.
| | | Album Rating: 2.0
except this album was forced by the record company and it is boring.
| | | Fair enough. Just came across to me that people who'd normally give this, say, a 2, would seem to lower their ratings in order to prove a point.
