Review Summary: A completely different approach from the man who "Ruined Dubstep"
In previous EP's we have seen variances in genre and style from his usual sound of metal inspired grime: think "Sunsets", "Afro Blue", "Thoughts", "Favourite Things" (or "Tingz"); but we have never seen an EP that is universally different altogether. Borgore is definitely evolving into a completely different beast.
The tune "Delicious" features an upbeat intro that dissolves into a catchy drop that features melodies usually unseen in Borgore tracks. The rap in this tune is nothing to speak of and follows the general "don't take me seriously" attitude that Borgore lives by.
"Gloryhole" (the worst of the album and one of the reasons I rated this less than Excellent) features a rather annoying background voice, complimented with a (legimately excellent) drum and hi-hat pattern, which again dissolves into a more classic borgore tune littered with blowjob gulps and devil roars. The biggest complaint with this track is the ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE rapping, which despite the fact that it is not to be taken seriously anyway; feels completely out of place in this track.
"Someone Else's" is interesting... Very seldom do you see an instrumental version of a song that makes you feel and react so much differently from the original. Nonetheless, in this song, you absolutely do. Whereas the instrumental is a legitimate drum and bass head-bobber to be listened to almost ambiently, the original is essentially the equivalent of a rapper's love song and therefore COMPLETELY risks Borgore's image; however it actually works. This version actually makes you listen to Borgore's lyrics for once, and I think in this track he finally wants to be taken seriously. With lyrics speaking of real heartbreak and loss complimented by a great drum and bass backing this is by far the most thematically different (and in my opinion the best) track in this album - * DONE BY BORGORE *.
The final song is a remix of "Someone Else's" by Document One: a british dubstep duo, and is definitely the most fun to be had in this EP. Despite featuring distorted samples in the actual drop which I find far too similar to Skrillex, this tune keeps you mesmerized with the very chill house inspired intro that includes absolutely incredible synth harmonization, and then completely jars you with a rather unexpected drop: a drop that may even have been worth excluding... It is also as I implied my favourite track on the album.
As a conclusion, this is not a Borgore fan's EP. But it is an excellent EP in it's own right. My biggest gripe about it is that Gloryhole and Delicious seem broken as the vocal versions do not enhance the original (instrumentals) whatsoever, but rather degrade their potential. Obviously the most redeeming quality in this album is the diversity between the three "Someone Else's" tracks as each version has something different - yet equally amazing to offer.
