A lot of people say ewww... when they here this is Christian music. Honestly the genre of Christian music is underrated. Dc Talk did something very important for the music industry; they brought something other than worship to the Christian industry. It brought a rock feel to it that even the metal heads of the industry can appreciate, and it's an excellent album.
The Good:
Their is a lot of good in this album, as above I mentioned that it was one of the most influential alternative Christian albums of all time. But it also brought forward the subject of Human Equality with it's song Colored People, the song has a great chorus and has a beautiful subject manner the instruments are great as well. If you look into the vocals into the song they really are great. Jesus Freak is the first ever head-bang Christian song. The instruments and the drums are great and the vocals are very entertaining. Without this song we may not have any Christian bands that really take risks, this song paved the way for that opening. The songs subject is to say that you should stand up for who you are in Christ and not be scared to shout it out, It honestly is another DC Talk song with a great subject manner to it. What If I stumble is about how Jesus always forgives you no matter what you do. What if I stumble? Is asking Jesus if he still accept them after all the mistakes. If you listen in the background there is a voice saying yes. To the song it is a beautiful acoustic song about just what I stated above the song is kind of a calm song after we saw Jesus Freak which was a very hard song, the song fits in perfectly with were the album is going. Just Between You And Me is a song you can listen to over and over again the song is just pure brilliance. The instrumentals may not be as good as in the acoustic track "What If I Stumble" but the vocals may be the best they have been on the whole album. Like It, Love It, Need It, has kind of a disco feel which makes it a very fun song. The song reminds me of the Newsboys Christian song Love, Liberty, And Disco. In the Light is one of the most uplifting tracks on the album and also one of the best. I remember hearing the track for the first time and knowing I needed to buy this CD. The song has great vocals and the instrumentals work out perfectly. "Minds Eye" is an excellent song but it takes a few listen to be honest. The first time I listened to it, it didn't have the wow factor that had been in other songs. The song is great though.
The "That's Alright":
Don't get me wrong there is nothing bad about this album but their are some things that are very mediocre. The Ms. Morgan interlude with the "Turn down that music" that the old lady was yelling really isn't that funny unless your 9 years old. The Jesus freak remix isn't that great either as they should just have left the normal version as it is. Day-By-Day is a very good song but it gets old after a while. That's about all that's all right with this album.
In Conclusion:
My conclusion is that this CD could have possibly saved the Christian industry. Sure we will still be singing Amazing Grace 30 years from now, but Jesus freak really got young people into Christian Music. That's what makes this album great.
