Review Summary: An album to grow on.
In fall Via will be 2 years old , there's only one review on the album so why not write one? Above all , this is an album you need to take time to get the hang off. For me it took atleast 2-3 listens to get into it and feel what they're trying to accomplish. Now after atleast 30 listen or not more im still not getting sick of it , in fact , it's only getting better. As well as many other bands these days Volumes is an "Djent" act or whatever you wanna call it , this might scare you off at first , but trust me this is not an regular Groove/Djent act , with their melodic parts , catchy riffs , unique and original vocals this band aint to regular "Djent" band.
To start off the album we get an very hard hitting song , many bands these days use an melodic or instrumental intro to their albums. On Via they start off with the heaviest track on the album , the riffs in this song and vocalwork is simply amazing. The message of the lyrics are really something i can relate to and understand.
Many other bands in the same scene use melodic parts , so does Volumes , but Volumes parts are not too long or boring , the soaring piano guitars are very nice and doesn't get tiring.
There are much polyrythmic work on this album , in many cases i feel bands in the same category only use polyrythms as an excuse to show off skill , but with Volumes the polyrythms are very "headbangable" and feels very natural and fitting.
Every track on this album has it own unique riffs and doesn't sound like any other riffs on the other songs , the ability to make every song sound fresh after 30 listens are simply astonishing. At first when i listened i felt that the chugging was tiring and boring , i don't know how the chugging can be so fun to listen to that is just one of many skills the guitarist own.
The clean vocals on this album , appears way too little in my opinion. They only appear two times: in the end of The Columbian Faction , And on Edge Of The Earth. I wouldn't like to say the cleans are "angelic" but they are really really good.
The ex-guitarist that possesed the voice quitted the band back in 2011 , Volumes has though confirmed they will find someone else to do the cleans on the new album. This is very exciting , because on tour they got Hance Alligood to do the cleans on Edge Of The Earth. I hope they don't pick him because his voice doesn't quite fit , it's too high pitch for their songs.
So let's hope the next album will be just as great as Via.
