Review Summary: U mad Emily Haines?

I've never really been into Indie-rock, its always been a genre that made me think of college graduates trying their best to play a guitar whilst singing soppy lyrics. However Metric surprised me, they were catchy, and had some fresh original music to offer. I found them through a Metric obsessed friend who insisted they would change the way I saw the indie scene. And he was right. I really enjoyed Fantasies (One Wolrd Underground is more of a "meh" to me) Of course when their latest album came was leant to me, I expected to enjoy it. But the sad reality is, I didn't really. It was just more of the same, but tired out and half hearted same.

Lyrically, this album is the worst Metric has to offer. The first track Artificial Nocturne opens with "Im just as f**ked up as they say". I mean, really? It's like they're trying to get a Parental Advisory sticker to make them seem hard and tough. Metric have had some pretty explicit lyrics in the past, but those worked and actually fitted with the rest of the songs lyrics and had a purpose. These lyrics are the opposite, they're just stuck there for the sake of it. After this opening, the rest of the song is pretty bland and repetitive, drawing a lot of similarities with Mr Blue Sky. Youth Without Youth is most definitely a gem amongst the trash. It's a catchy song, with poetic lyrics. It sounds like Metric, the Metric we all know and love. It's just a shame the rest of the album isn't as good. Every single other song on the album sounds the same, same drum patterns, same chord structures, and some really boring lyrics.

Emily Haines' singing is worse here as well. Not as in "My goodness she can't sing anymore", but as in "Please shut up". She just sounds the same on every track, to the point where her voice becomes irritating. I tried my hardest to look past it but I couldn't, it's like when a baby is crying on an aeroplane, inescapably annoying.

Overall it's a pretty boring album. Youth Without Youth is the only song I would say is worth the listen, and the only reason I'm not giving this album an "awful" rating. Hardcore metric fans will probably find one or two more tracks they enjoy, but for the rest of us it's more of the same but not as good

I really dig The Void. But yeah, pretty bland album overall. A marked drop from the quality of all their other releases.
