Franz Ferdinand, the irresistably catchy rock quartet from across the pond, teased eager fans last summer with "Do You Want To", a single that took the amazingly big sound of 2004s smash hit "Take Me Out" and blew it out of the water. This single, landing at a healthy #9 spot on the U.S. modern rock charts and #4 on the UK charts, teased avid listeners with a hummable, danceable, and all-out enjoyable pop/rock hit that only gave the slightest glimpse of the 2005 masterpiece, "You Could Have It So Much Better".
Don't be fooled by the title, the #1 best-selling album leaves hardly any room for improvement. Whether the boys are serving up hectic tempo changes, slow piano-focused ballads, or new-wave power chords, every song glistens with a light that could only come from the dual guitars of Alex and Nick, the booming bass of Bob, and the complex rythms of Paul.
Fans of previous singles such as "Take Me Out" and "This Fire" will love the very classic Franz sound of opener "The Fallen", hit single "Do You Want To", closer "Outsiders". However, the band shows a great level of maturity on the songs that take it down a notch and add an ingredient of awe-inspiring songwriting that was easy to miss among the catchy hooks of their debut. One of the definite highlights of the album is "Fade Together", a song that mimicks the soaring vocals and beautiful piano of early Queen. Another interesting piano moment is "Eleanor Put Your Boots On". This song immediately brings Lennon and McCartney to mind, showing that Franz Ferdinand has matured in their songwriting greatly since the formulated pop of their early work.
The greatest task for a band is to create a follow-up to a chart-topping debut. It's easy for a band to slip into a sound that never progresses or develops. Franz Ferdinand is one of those bands that has managed to pull themselves to an even greater status. A third effort is expected sometime towards the end of 2006 or the beginning of 2007. With the cards already dealt, it's hard to imagine that we could have it any better.

| | | So, so, SO completely not 5 stars.
Like, the antithesis of all that IS 5 stars.
Not a bad band by any means, but they'll never produce a classic for the ages.
| | | There is no way in heaven or hell that this deserves a five. Maybe 3.5, tops. I say
again: five should only be reserved for classics within a genre or a groundbreaking
work in terms of musical experimentation, expansion or sound within the context of
said genre or said group. The top rating is thrown around far too often on sputnik:
professional reviewers look at more considerations than their own personal taste or

This album is nowhere near worthy of a five. In future reviews try to describe the music and feel of the songs and album more and spend less time extolling the virtues of the band/album. It's okay to be a fan, but try to be a little more objective with future reviews. Franz Ferdinand isn't really my cup of tea, but they do have their moments and sure know how to write catchy tunes. But classic? I think not.
P.S. Iluvatar eh? A Tolkien fan perhaps?

I luv a tard? Ignorant fools. Lol. Im also quite the Tolkien fan (the man was a freaking genious) and have read quite a bit of his work. I agree about Fade Together also, that song boosted this album from a 2.5 to a 3 for me.

Franz Ferdinand, the irresistably catchy rock quartet from across the pond,
Actually they live about an hour away from me.

But I give it a 4.
| | | Oh what the hell. No.

You're review could've been alot better. You really didn't go into any detail whatsoever, except some minor comparisons to other bands/songs. You didn't capture the album for me, and from what I see, anyone.
Good album, though.

I love this album, but yeah, no way it's a 5.
Highlights are probably Fade Together, title track, The Fallen.
Do You Want To was a shameless rehash of Take Me Out.

This has to be one of the most underrated bands in recent memory. These guys are amazing and they make top-notch albums. I'm so excited there currently recording their third album.
