Review Summary: I STARTED THIS FIRE AND I WATCHED IT BURN TO THE GROUND!
A Charmer : A Review of Tiger's Jaw's Fourth LP
Infectious Pop Punk with Indie Rock laden experimentation. Pretty much sums up all of Tigers Jaw, but what makes Charmer so special? It was a send-off of sorts. While Tigers Jaw consisting only of Ben and Brianna now, during the recording of Charmer, the other members came back for their input, and to contribute one last time to what could very well be the final album for Tigers Jaw.
As a group anyways, now only being fronted by Ben and Brianna.
Sonically speaking the album is a much different beast in comparison to anything else the band has done, a whole lot less Pop Punk and more Indie Rock this time around, having some of Tigers Jaw's darkest lyrics and most explosive moments. IE : Charmer, Frame You, Divide. They certainly were not ***ing around this time around.
Charmer delves into the mindset of often fairly terrible people lyrically.
"I'll touch you and you'll know I'm really bored. I'll call you when I'm cool enough to want you. You'll see me and you'll know you're sleeping"
But in the world of Charmer, nothing is black and white, and nothing really matters. That is besides the music that accompanies it, which is for lack of better phrasing, the best Tigers Jaw has ever sounded. Insanely catchy vocal melodies, infectious drumming, catchy as all hell base lines and guitar riffs. It's all perfection.
Brand New is a HUGE influence of Tigers Jaw, and on Charmer it really shows, which is not by any means a bad thing, Production wise the album is clean, dark, and mesmerising in places. Charmer is a modern day masterpiece from a band that once just brought us songs about Girl Troubles and Drowning in one's own swimming pool.
It's a cool world indeed.
