You'll notice I couldn't be bothered to find a cool lyrical excerpt for the summary section this time. That's because, for once in this journey through Opeth, absolutely nothing from this album has stuck with me. It was in one ear and out the other. And for Opeth? A band I've given five 5s to? That is not good.
Every single song on this album sounds the same. Boring acoustic/electric intro with organ accompaniment, uninspired vocal performance on the verses, acoustic noodling, lame solo, end. That seems like a vast oversimplification, but I really cannot force myself to remember anything about this album. I've listened to it five to six times, and I can barely tell you names of songs, much less recall any noteworthy parts. This is derivative, overlong, King Crimson-worshipping wankery, and I cannot believe that this is from the same band that made Still Life.
I suppose there's something to be said for Åkerfeldt just deciding to do what he wants, and the hell with the rest of us if we don't like it. From what I can tell, that's certainly the mindset he's had throughout his entire career. But that doesn't excuse the absolutely pathetic production here. The drums have absolutely no punch whatsoever, the bass is hardly audible most of the time, if it's even being played at all. And the guitar tone is just... really bad. It sounds like the only thing anyone put any effort on in mixing is the keyboards, which sound nice. But that is hardly enough. Maybe they were going for some lo-fi early 70s sound, but even then, it's a hollow imitation, and pointless considering the only reason records from that timeframe sounded like that is because they had to.
More than anything, Heritage sounds bored and lazy. Like no one gave enough of a rat's ass to show up and do their jobs right. Åkerfeldt sounds like he's fallen asleep at the mic half the time, and drumming is a significant step down from Watershed. The guitar work is decent, but the tone is so piss-poor it doesn't matter. This is a disappointing record, and the only reason it doesn't get a 1.5 or a 1 is because it isn't offensive or poorly performed, it's just boring. It doesn't sound slap-shod, the band did sound like they knew what they wanted to do, but what they wanted to do was painfully derivative and unbearably boring.
Favorite Tracks: Um.....
Least Favorite Tracks: I remember I really didn't like Häxprocess. It seemed to stand out somewhat. For the wrong reasons.

I love this album lol, never understood why it gets so much hate

It sounds like generic 70s prog imo
Opeth are usually much more interesting, and it's not just because this isn't metal or whatever. When I first heard they were doing a full progressive rock album, I was actually very excited (and I didn't love Watershed at the time, especially after Ghost Reveries).

"drumming is a significant step down from Watershed"
This is just...not true I don't know what to tell you.
| | | This album has easily the best drumming on any Opeth album and Haxprocess is top 10 Opeth overall.
Dom's not wrong, I am pissed.

Top 10 Opeth overall?
Uhhhhhh I was with you on the drumming, but you lost me with that one dude

I must admit that "Heritage"is far away of be my favourite album of Opeth, but it still remains a great album. Still, they don't have weak albums. And I never understood why it gets so much hate, too. The only explanation is that many people don't like prog rock. So, they don't accept that a band can change, even radically, their music path. But, personally, I don't have any problem about it.

I fucking love prog rock, but to take the reviewers words it "just feels like a hollow imitation." As mentioned earlier, I was really pumped for a prog rock Opeth album, I just didn't expect it to be this boring outside of the drumming.

Album isn't bad. Drumming is particularly pleasing.

I disagree. It wasn't a hollow imitation. This was simply their way to make a tribute to the 70's. As the name of the album indicates, it represents their respect for their heritage, the prog rock music.

New Opeth just makes me sad more than anything
| | | Album Rating: 3.5
Nah, this is good, different but still retains some individuality & creativity, the two after this are a major step down... especially PC, that’s painfully derivative & awfully dull.

Same

I don’t think the newest three are worth listening to several times, unlike everything else this band has done
