With sights set squarely on the “goddamn kill switch”, Fear Factory create an industrial strength cybernetic rock opera pitting man against machine with humanity’s future at stake. Sure, the concept’s a bit worn and torn, but FF is the perfect urban assault vehicle to bring these tales of twisted steel to life. Raymond Herrera’s drums plaster walls like hails of gunfire, militant in precision while Dino Cazares and Christian Olde Wolbers synchronize their guitar and bass chug to match the percussive onslaught...quick starts and stops chopping up the waves of distorted atmosphere. Meanwhile, Burton Bell, THE innovator of mashing both Death Metal’s ferocity with a clean gothic croon, is perfect in his role of hitting the listener with vocalized brick baths before coming back with an ethereal chorus, somehow creating beauty in this dark dystopia.
While many will proclaim that predecessor, Demanufacture is the pinnacle of the FF catalog, I ‘ve always found Obsolete to be more focused, nuanced, and well balanced of the two, the band sounding more confident and succeeding in subtle experimentation, even utilizing upright bass on the pounding “Edgecrusher”. Other highlights of humanity’s downfall include (the aptly titled) “Descent”, which is a melodic departure for the band, slowing the tempo down while Burton sings nice-like over a fuzzy bass throb and clean guitar chimes. “Freedom Or Fire” is a blitzkrieg of off-time drum barrages with an Industrial/New Wave vibe in between the widening concrete cracks. Title track, “Obsolete” is even more percussively twisted and heavy! But the crowning achievement here is “Resurrection”, one of those timeless works of genius…a slow building emotional rollercoaster ride that delivers everything great about the Fear Factory experience in six and a half minutes of beautiful intensity, culminating in a Godly chorus that breaks through these blackened skies with shimmering rays of sunlight.

Well, you seem to love this album.

This used to be my favorite by them for many years as well, actually. It wasn't until a few years ago where I started liking Demanufacture more, but respect dude. Gonna jam this now.

He he, he actually managed to make me listen to it too. I really like Smasher devourer on this, they never truly came back to these very slow and heavy type of songs.

Nice short review. I may need to listen to this album again having not given it a full listen in years, but I do remember loving it for its consistency and wider acceptance of melody and melancholy. I still prefer the rawer nature of Demanufacture, but Obsolete stands near enough toe to toe in terms of musicianship and songwriting quality.

Yeah dude, Smasher Devourer rules, like every song here
| | | Love this band. Obsolete is fucking awesome!

Transgression is their only weak album in my opinion

I mean Digimortal has some embarrassing tracks, but yeah other than that all of their albums are fucking awesome.
Their newest album Genexus is underrated as hell. I jam that shit all the time.

Yeah, I didn't dare bring Genexus but to me it's Dema, Genexus and then Obsolete.
I think it seriously sucks that Genexus is so underrated because it's the best thing Dino and Burton could have come up with and it's like telling them "give up on FF." And Burton seems to seriously have given up on the band right now.

I wouldn't say that Genexus is better than Obsolete from a more objective point of view, but I still enjoy listening to it more. I like Mechanize too, it's just not my favourite.

It's probably my third favorite, but wtf Burton has given up on the band??? I thought I remembered reading that they were working on a new album or something, but that was a while ago

Dino said "already written a lot of new material, new album possibly for the end of 2017"
Then they cancelled a date at a festival. Christian Older Wolbers mocked them on twitter by saying that the band had split.
Dino officially contradicted him. Burton Didn't.
Then no news about a new FF album, and Dino announces a solo one. What do you think this solo album is made of ?
And recently, Burton appears with Ministry and talks new Ascension of the Watchers album while Dino laughs and answers "I'm working on my solo album" when asked if there's a new upcoming FF on the work.
So, unless Burton suddenly decides to record vocals on Dino's "solo album" Fear Factory seems pretty much dead right now. Except that they did not announce it officially, so maybe Burton simply wants to take a break.
