Release Date: 2005 | Tracklist

Thrice's newest release, "Vheissu" marks a unique change of pace for the Irving, CA quartet. They've taken a progressive, experimental tone to their post-hardcore/metal edge, and created a beautiful masterpiece, worthy of the title "epic." This is an amazing work, and it's good to see Thrice continually evolving their sound and styles. The name "Vheissu" was inspired by a book Dustin (lead vocals/guitar) Kensrue read, and is a rough conjunction of the phrase "wie heisst du" or "who are you?"

The album starts off with "Image Of The Invisible", a powerful, melodic anthem filled with chanting gang vocals and pulsating rhythms. This moves into "Between The End And Where We Lie", a softer, more forgiving type of song with a wonderful time signature change in the chorus alternating from 4/4 to 7/8 time. "The Earth Will Shake" has a folk-based intro inspired by a CD of chain gang recordings Teppei Teranishi (Lead guitar, vocals) was listening to at the time. It quickly changes from a soft, acoustic intro, to a wild, hardcore bashing in 7/8 time. "Atlantic", once again, calms us down and reveals the more melodic side to Thrice's music before we are thrust into the arpeggiated piano melodies of For Miles, and the violent burst of energy that is "Hold Fast Hope". Number seven on the album, "Music Box", features an actual music box's melody that Teppei purchased at a Japanese hotel when on tour. "Like Moths To Flame" is a hardcore episode in Drop-B tuning, with excellent interlaced screams ending off the song, leading into the softer "Of Dust And Nations". This song features an amazing tapping lick by Teppei throughout the chorus and outro of the song apparently inspired by the band "Minus The Bear". "Stand And Feel Your Worth" is an over-5 minute-long masterpiece of harsh vocals and soothing melodies, leading perfectly into the last track "Red Sky". What a perfect way to end off this beautiful album, with a beautiful melodic song. Featuring excellent intertwined guitar melodies and an ethereal outro, this album is closed leaving the listener fully satisfied.

Again, Dustin has managed to write amazingly deep and touching lyrics. His lyrics flow like poetry, and every song on this album has great personal meaning and feeling. He sings with such passion and vigor, it's hard not completely get sucked into the mood and emotions of the song. He has a great singing voice, and along with that voice, he has a powerful, growling scream that makes it feel like, forgive me, the Earth will shake. (Cheesy much?)

The best lyrical performance, I feel, is his job with "Of Dust And Nations". Beautiful alliteration, ("saturn will not sleep until the sand has made us clean, still we stack our stones and bury what we can") and a strong Biblical message speaking of materialism, this song really hits home for today's culture.

This CD may be one of the best I own. It's just amazing. I cannot put it fully into words, because this album defies traditional explanation. It's a masterwork that can't be compared to anything else, for Thrice has made a sound all their own from the very beginning, and continue to evolve and grow as both musicians and songwriters. This album receives a perfect 10/10 from me. I would reccomend picking it up as soon as you can. I assure you that you won't be dissapointed.

A note: If you've done seven reviews in one day, they have an over-whelming chance of being bad. And so it is.

I've written them over a period of two years on Ultimate-Guitar.com as Zamboni, asshole. My reviews are short and to the point, and if you can't accept that, please, by all means, fuck off and don't bother commenting.

Quite distasteful. By the way, Ultimate-Guitar means nothing for credentials. For this sites standards, these are far too short, and lack loads of detail. You write fine. It's not hard to flesh them out. The seven reviews you've submitted today alone are going to knock every single other review off of the main page, all of which required loads more effort and are better than these. This Message Edited On 06.27.06

Well, obviously this meets whatever "standards" you have set, because it was accepted.

What's with this little vendetta you have with my reviewing style?

Hold on there, buddy. It meets the word requirement. That still doesn't make it detailed and/or good.

What's with this little vendetta you have with my reviewing style?

Have you not read our posts? These are well-written, but lack detail. They would be fine for the sound-off feature, but as full-length reviews are simply scarce.

Ok, I will edit my reviews to include more information. Sorry, I took a look at some of the other reviews, and I realize how off-base mine are.

It will take some time though, but thanks for the heads-up.
