Review Summary: Hopeless music to have a heart attack to.
From the moment the first snares slam like gunshots, this twisted anxiety-ridden roller coaster of an album makes it clear: you have no idea what you’re in for. You can feel the pain that went into making this in the jarring vocals, which most of the time sound like cries for help. I’ve never heard anything that made me feel this level of claustrophobia. This album is a simultaneous statement on life and the album itself. If you’re looking for the classic chorus-verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus, you absolutely will not get what you want. Instead, you will feel attacked by a barrage of drums and guitars that build walls around you, and endless simple lyrics chanted like spells. This album is dark and brutal, made up of failed dreams, invasion, and surrender.
In some ways, it reminds me of a performance art piece I had to watch for a class. The only words I could come up with to describe it was: everything that a show shouldn’t be. It was disgusting, patience-testing, and the audio got so loud at some points that it physically hurt to remain in the room, and I seriously considered leaving. But that was the goal. I stuck through to the end because that was the point. And, while I thought it was an awful show, I remember it to this day because of how offensive it was to the senses.
The goal seems to be the same here. This is the opposite of “easy-listening”, and it’s done its job perfectly.
