Review Summary: An emotional ride that doesn't last..
“Death we Seek” is a follow up to the sophomore record “The Way It Ends”. This record starts off in the Currents fashion with downtuned guitars and plenty of screaming vocals and chorus a-plenty. It's about 40 mins of Current's goodness. Vocalist Brian Willie has some great lyrics on this record that are touch-felt and emotionally damning. The beginning tracks “So Alone” and “The Death we seek '' are indeed solid tracks to add to the Currents catalog.
The issue I feel that this record suffers from is a lack of distinguishing factors between tracks, which leads to me dozing off for some of the record. The album dips in quality around the 4th track "So Alone" and doesn't pick until about the 7th track "Vengeance". One of Current's best factors is its wacky guitar work, epic choruses and heavy emotional themes. I think this album is more of a straightforward approach with little with experimentation. The vocals carry a huge chunk of the album's middle tracks.
It feels that this could have been more the sum of its parts... A couple of highlights are the songs “Remember me” and “Vengeance”. These songs resonated so deeply with me I felt I was on the edge of tears. You can honestly feel the emotions coming out with every word. It feels so disappointing to that this record shows the highlights of properly using your vocalist well without allowing the band to shine along with for the ride. I honestly felt this album was one step away from being a radio rock band with a heavier guitar tone.
Overall, it disappointed me in the record. Maybe things will change with repeated listens as of right now. I wanted more, and this album faded out before I wanted to be taken on the emotional ride that it promised.
