Review Summary: typical pop
In this debut EP, Addison makes pop music like early, forgettable 2000s girl groups. Its catchy, simple pop music that is sure to be forgotten in a few years. Alright, so Obsessed has more of a Maroon 5 vibe, but Maroon 5 are vastly past their expiration date. If you’re looking for personality, it’s not found in the delicate pop hooks, or even the surprisingly muted Charli XCX feature. The music is basic to a fault, with a singer so comfortable in their skin their voice is nearly shaved clean of all dynamics. Auto-tune makes the vocals clean, but it cannot hide paper thin vocals.
Still, this is pop, and there is at least a gentle groove pushing tracks to the dance floor (a quiet nudge). The choruses are a nice change from the otherwise robotic verses. Power stays with the choruses, because otherwise verses are easy come/go, and out/in the ears. Absolutely nothing special happens in the verses, and the singer dishing out hamby pamby vocals equals even more average pop-artist energy.
Considering this is a debut EP, it ain’t bad. More experience will help Addison sound more professional, hopefully. For now we’re handed fairly basic pop as the meal. Therefore, it’s an average meal that could use more flavourful additions. Nothing On (But The Radio) is a decent bop but both the synths and overly processed vocals fall flat like a pancake without syrup. Such is the fate of this EP: to make a middling impression. We’ll have to wait and see if Addison will fill up their tires for the next release.
