Review Summary: Pink Floyd's most ambitious narrative becomes one of the greatest rock operas of all time!

This album is a long one, and definitely one of their most accessible ones too. While some people consider it their magnum opus, I'd have to be inclined to disagree. It's truly an astonishing album with a really well-constructed storyline that tells of an experience many of us are all too familiar with; shutting ourselves in from the world and isolation due to depression and mental health issues, a topic that's important and a lot of these hit hard for someone like myself. The songs here are almost all incredible.

Musically as well this albums incredible, and even features Bruce Johnston of the amazing band The Beach Boys conducting harmonies on my personal favorite track "The Show Must Go On". However, not everything is amazing on this album, there's a few bad songs and filler.

"Don't Leave Me Now" is a mediocre track on its own and really should've just been part of "One of My Turns" instead of its own standalone track since it feels like it was meant to be an experience, while "Goodbye Cruel World" is about Pink deciding to commit suicide yet he doesn't do it and it's not explained in the story, "Vera" is just a garbage orchestral-wannabe song and has Roger Waters attempting to go beyond his natural range making it sound very awkward, "Bring The Boys Back Home" has interesting tape manipulation but is obvious filler and doesn't fit where it is placed whatsoever, and "Outside The Wall" is pointless as its own track and should have been part of "The Trial".

Despite that, it's still one of the best albums of all time, though a tad further down I'd say than the last three and "Meddle". The rest of the songs are nothing short of brilliant, though this was the beginning of the end of a reign over rock.

Didn't put as much into this as I did with Animals tbh but still good album.

The first time I heard this music was while watching the film as a kid. The animation that accompanied the trial, and the weird radioactive mutants, and other stuff like the guy melting while shooting up during Comfortably Numb, were some of the darkest moments in film I had ever experienced at that age, even compared to roughly contemporary films like The Exorcist.

But it's still one of my favorite records. And I hardly ever enjoy slow music. Go figure

@kildare I love the movie! The art in that is astonishing and the animated segments are some of my favorite of all time, it's really a masterpiece!

This is a great album but idk, moon, animals, and Pompeii just shit all over this. I think cutting up Floyd into bite sized pop songs does their talents a disservice in the big picture.

"cutting up Floyd into bite sized pop songs does their talents a disservice in the big picture."

Agreed. Overplaying songs is one of the great crimes against Art that is perpetrated every day by pretty much every radio station. It's positively ruined some of my favorite tracks. A significant part of my experience with music is having to make the effort to avoid constantly hearing the same overplayed shit. But in places like restaurants it is both impossible and infuriating

Would ya'll rate the movie the same? Not that an album should be judged by that, but just curious

Athough a lot of people hate concept albums, so maybe that's a variable here

There is actually a TON of filler on the album itself.

And if I'm honest, I would -- way back when I still listened to this one -- only listen to at most seven tracks, meaning only seven tracks with five stars, and the rest 1's at most.

So if I made an actual statistical calculation of the mean I would get...a lot less than five. But I tend to get hung-up on the "CLASSIC" verbiage. I don't know about ya'll, but for me it gets to be kind of a coin-flip between the verbiage and the number on this site. "Average" for me is like a mathematical average, "great for it's genre but lacking innovation." So 3/5 for me is "statistically average," rather than good. Ideally I'd like to see multiple rating classes, but that's obviously not happening

The majority of the actual songs on this album are amazing, as usual. The problem is the goofy, self-indulgent filler that overruns the album.

"goofy, self-indulgent filler." I definitely can't argue with that

this used to be one of my all time favorite albums buuuuuut gotta admit it just doesn't hit the pink floyd craving/doesn't have much of their sound. sounds more like a musical, and the actual songs likewise move into more of a dated 1979 sound like the glam of younglust or the discobeat in another brick in the wall. which is fine but doesn't have the same impact for me as like echoes/time/crazy diamond/dogs/etc. hey you is an absolute banger though and i do love absolutely the movie, i'm more likely to pop in my dvd than grab my cd for a car ride.

" while "Goodbye Cruel World" is about Pink deciding to commit suicide yet he doesn't do it and it's not explained in the story,"

also my interpretation of 'goodbye cruel world' is pink resigning from trying to live a normal life and completing the wall, isolating his subconscious from outside influences. he's trapped himself/lost compassion hence pretty much the entire second record from hey you up to the trial.

@artiswar Really I didn't put in the effort or time I put into my reviews usually. The quality in my previous ones compared to this is an immense difference I feel. I still put in my thoughts and feelings on the album overall but not as in-depth or as well-constructed as my review of Animals, The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and the other Floyd albums to this point (or my Sabbath and Zeppelin and Queen ones)

A few good songs, but overall, I just don't like this album. I was in high school when it came out, and I picked up a copy, played it for a few months. Was iffy on it, and someone offered to trade it to me for their brother's copy of Led Zeppelin III. Turned out it was a British pressing, too! Still have that LZ III, and I won that trade!

The beginning of Floyd's end. Waters becomes unbearable.
