| Pheromone mate in the space of about an hour i have fallen in love with half man half biscuit's achtung bono
| SlothcoreSam New Stick In the Wheel album. It is pretty good.
| DePlazz https://www.sputnikmusic.com/review/80881/Ed-Rush-and-Optical-Wormhole/
| AnimalsAsSummit idk if you heard my latest ep yet - techstep/ neurofunk - more coming very soon (next few days most likely) - https://kinggreenied.bandcamp.com/album/bring-on-the-future
| SandwichBubble My Doof is Dead conspiracy piece, a la Paul is Dead, is coming along smoothly. I'll find your killer so that your soul can finally rest.
| hogan900 What you think of the new Low album? just jammed their deubt and the new album and loved both of them
| zakalwe Where art thou wainwright. I miss ya!
| Frippertronics i dunno boss, there's a time and place for some of these things. Just lie low for a bit
| Atari um, Trampled by Turtles kick ****ing ass
| theBoneyKing We most both be expunging some internalized anger, lol. Yeah I've been bingeing, will this turn into "Boney's Metal Journey"...? Probably not, but I'll ride the phase for so long as it lasts.
| Sowing Yeah that 2nd half...gahh. People seem to be sleeping on Snakes and Ladders though. Definitely a top 3 L.E.G. track.
| Sowing So I can't flatter you into giving it a 3.5 or more, eh? Oh well, I mean you're free to dislike her vocals. Just a shame you don't appreciate them more, because the new record is breathtaking but also vocal-centric.
| Sowing I'm being completely serious, knowing you are entitled to your opinion...how is the new Florence a 1.5? I'm just struggling to understand on a human level how something so goddamn beautiful can be not underappreciated, but despised, by one of the site's more sensible users :-(
| AnimalsAsSummit hmmm well very fair explanation. i am definitely looking at how the entire thing evokes a specific atmosphere, thats how it is for me. very myserious, dreamy stuff. but i also rather like the vocals i have to admit.
| Egarran (Don't tell anyone but I kinda liked your Immolation review)
| Egarran Omg it's so hard not to post in your Last 100 thread. I have never been more triggered.
| AnimalsAsSummit what'd you think of the lotus eaters - no sense of sin? i see you have it at 3, but to me that album is one of the finest pieces of music from that middle 80s period. interested in how you perceive it.
| Dewinged New Therapy? in September, Doof, you heard the single? Gonna jam it now.
| Drifter Gettin close. You're still gonna be on sput right?
| danielcardoso It would probably have to be something between either Fela Kuti ("Zombie" and "Expensive Shiy") or Francoise Hardy ("La Question"). James Blake is making a great impact on me as well. His next album will be amazing if his most recent songs are any indicator. I have been catering to electronic more heavily... BBNG and Bonobo in particular are warranting repeated listens atm. And you?
| robin yes i think it's greaaaat
| AnimalsAsSummit thanks! and im happy to see you fell for 'california'. that albium is such a gorgeous thing to behold, and its crazy that its completely under the radar on this site.
| Dylan620 Hahaha what can I say Doof?! Admittedly a 4.5 for YOTS might be a bit of a generous rating from me but I'm genuinely shocked at how much I've been enjoying it. They followed up an album I actively disliked with one I can't get enough of, hats off to 'em
| TwigTW That's all I needed to hear. I'm on it!
| TwigTW The Rolling Nails? Nine Inch Stones? I'm sure Reznor would love that comparison, lol.
| TwigTW You were right. I listened to some of what NIN released after Fragile, and I wasn't missing anything. I actually do like the new one. Still, the best thing about it is the length... Well, that was interesting. Now I don't have to listen to NIN for another ten years. ;-)
| Sharkattack That?s the thing with sharks. They are so frightening and dangerous but once you get a good look at one you realize how badass they actually are.
| Sharkattack Was expecting your ratings to be better but not too shabby overall
| anat penned a maltese review when you get a jiffy to have a look
| TwigTW Re-listening to the classic NIN albums now. Sounds good, but this is not a catalog I can breeze through--too much angst and anger. Maybe I'll just pick it up again on Friday with the new one, lol.
| TwigTW Yeah, that's the truth. Maybe this is just what he sounds like now... I'm ridiculously behind on NIN. I think The Fragile is the newest one I've heard. I should try to catch up.
| TwigTW Is it just me, or does the new NIN song (God Break Down The Door) sound like a Trent Reznor remix of a Bowie song? :-/
| foxblood lool that's totally what it is, sounds good to me though tho.
| foxblood you didn't like Hatchie - Sugar and Spice? I thought it was pretty good. could be stronger but not bad. what did you not like so much?
| Atari hell yeah, man! agreed about her vocal inflections - they really stood out on Dragonfly and Arches. album still needs more spins from me as well but it's def a borderline 4 for me. glad you enjoyed it :]
| Atari nvmd someone added it, thanks if that was you haha
| Atari her voice is soo damn good tho ;) that's the selling point for me honestly, but the lyrics seem above par to me as well. 3.5 to 4 for me rn but I'm too lazy to add the album to the db
| Atari you move fast, haha! just seems like it might (?) be your kinda thing as far as this kind of singer-songwriter folk goes. If you don't like the track Dragonfly then maybe it's not for you
| Atari under the radar rec for doof: Olivia Chaney - Shelter :0)
| TwigTW Bon Voyage surprised me. I thought it was nice at first, but half-way through it really grabbed me. It's going to get many summer plays.
| luci yeah she was only renowned in the uk... at least sophie would recognize the ref (she's scottish)
| luci aqua remixed by autechre
| luci was expecting a 1.5... bubblegum pop with a doof 3? now that's an endorsement
| TwigTW Just noticed you gave that a 4, I'll have to check it out.
| TwigTW Is it too soon to rec you something else based on Perry Blake? If so, save this one for later: The Apartments - No Song, No Spell, No Madrigal. He is another French-only popular artist ( I say he because The Apartments are basically Peter Milton Walsh). There is a back-story you should know to fully appreciate the album. The Guardian tells it better than I can: https://www.theguardian.com/music/2015/aug/07/the-apartments-albums-birth-so-traumatic-its-a-miracle-it-exists-at-all
| AnimalsAsSummit great rating on i trawl the megahertz!! i have a new album out, its the first solo album under my real name, and i think subsequent solo releases will follow in the same fashion - https://kinggreenied.bandcamp.com/album/geosinect-methods-of-its-growth
| Divaman Btw, can't wait to see that killer Canadian team in the 2026 Cup. :)
| theBoneyKing Yeah, I mean Case is coming from a different sort of writing/arranging perspective these days - Blacklisted remains the peak for me but if you want more like that definitely try Fox Confessor. The more straight country Furnace Room Lullaby is great as well and maybe the best showcase of her voca talents.
| theBoneyKing Ill check the Maltese at some point, pretty busy these next two weeks though. The Howard really hasnt grabbed me on the whole, there are great moments but it hasnt much drawn me in beyond that. The OPN I find more interesting for sure. The Case is a grower, I wasnt convinced until after 3-4 spins but Halls of Sarah, the opener, Curse of the I-5 Corridor, and the cover/duet Sleep All Summer are all stunners. The lyrics reveal a lot of layers on closer attention as well.
| TwigTW Let me know what you think of the debut. I'm curious (and it's not streaming anywhere) . . . It took me a couple of listens to warm-up to California too. Perry is working that classic Burt Bacharach sound, which I love, so it was only a matter of time . . . On the newest one, with Electro Sensitive Behavior, he sounds like Gary Numan. I was not expecting that!
| Divaman Well, good to see that you and Zak still have some hope in your hearts. We're not even in the damned thing!
| Divaman So are you and Zak feeling hopeful going into the World Cup, or not so much?
| Papa Universe what? another Don't you forget us? https://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?listid=181720
| anat might have to review the matt maltese. i mean get a load of these lyrics: "i wish i could fill his shoes, but i'm only a 7", "i have heard that some people think the world is flat, but if it were, how come i don't see you anywhere", "i was talking at you, you were overdosing quietly"
| anat the opener is one of the catchiest songs i've heard this year, album is full of schmaltz and bad lines and i love it. i probably won't, i like to save everything until the end of the year, but i'll keep a keen eye on yours as we're (mostly) in tune thus far
| anat highly recommend the matt maltese debut. i put it up on sput as a 2016 release accidentally but it just came out. not too dissimilar to paddy hanna if he were an english lounge singer.
| luci glad you dig! a strain of electronic that slips easily into the listening rotation, like you said
| luci it's the one that got the most attention. i'm fond of a split she did with cs kreme last year (worth tracking down if you're into her sound)
| luci sent you the link there :)
| luci yeah, not on streaming though. i can dropbox if that's convenient
| Papa Universe another Don't You Forget Us, much sooner than I expected: https://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?listid=181709
| luci hey, have a rec like that e ruscha v: yu su - preparations for departure (downtempo/ambient)
| TwigTW I haven't listened to California yet. I'll give it a spin. I gave the live album a 4. His voice is just as good without all the studio wizardry... Wikipedia says that he has an album coming out in2018, and that he's popular in France--just France, lol.
| TwigTW I thought you would like it, but I never guessed how much! As far as I can tell, Perry is basically forgotten. Which is too bad because he does what he does so well. Sandriam is one of my all-time favorite songs.
| zakalwe I prefer the opener. Band is in it for the laughs so I take my hat off to em.
| TwigTW was just re-listening myself and thinking the same thing :)
| Sowing haha...I don't know. I'll see if I can sneak it in this week without pissing anyone off.
| theBoneyKing Mazzy Star are a mystery to me yeah, a handful of great songs from what I've heard of them but for the most part their stuff is a dreary slog. Hope's voice is very pretty but she barely knows who to write and sing a melody.
| theBoneyKing Never did check Fried Burgers no, Ill add her to the RYM wishlist though I've got quite a backlog atm. You made Evil Blizzard sound appealing, I've found myself wanting more "interesting" rock recently so I might give it a go anyways.
| Papa Universe took a peek, there's something cool about ageing folks still swinging them instruments and hitting them right notes... gives me hope
| Divaman In honor of your lost contributorship, and the passing of the Doofus identity after you reach 100 reviews, from the Canadian Shakespeare Company production of "Hamlet" as told by "South Park": "Now cracks a noble heart. Good night sweet prince. And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest, buddy!"
| anat the Jurado is standard fare on the surface, but some great lyrics and intimate moments, and a really rewarding back half
| Papa Universe And don't you at least like Caritas from Doll by Doll?
| anat will have to do some digging, but seems as though their output is slow. only 2018 releases thus far will have been these two.heard the new damien jurado? top 10 record for my year
| anat one to look out for - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=im9c-N8m1ac - same label as new aidan moffat, think this is an incredible track
| Spacesh1p I'm all for pushing the boundaries. We get too many of the same review here.
| Spacesh1p All good things must come to an end or something. I liked your writing despite most people ragging on you (some with good reason, others not).
| Spacesh1p I would have much preferred Spurs to get relegated before you, but I guess Sput mods lack that authority.
| TheSpaceMan you're right, i will tactically neg a review once a month across alts until the site's gerbil stops spinning the power wheel
| TheSpaceMan i just neg'd all the reviews uve written that had recieved one pos from toad
| Toad Boi I gotcha // Doof Squad TM
| Toad I just posd all the reviews uve written that hadn't received votes yet
| Papa Universe ****er, last time I got banned, not just my soul hurt, also my heart, spent some time in a hospital. You can't fall harder than that, unless you die.
| Papa Universe Got banned for it once before, won't mind getting banned again.
| Toad ur welcome for the 4% approval boost buddy :)
| butcherboy well, all you really have to do is wait for the breeze to change directions, and then the beliefs and values will go with them.. how it goes..
| butcherboy the whine brigade has prevailed, I see..
| KingDweedle Ok lord condescending holier than thou ****twit
| KingDweedle Yeah lmao u wish go back to ur Tiger Lilies old man
| Gyromania Yeah I might restart under an alt as well, feel like people are predisposed to hating on me these days lol.
| Gyromania Joining the ranks of the demoted eh.
| zakalwe Don?t know whether to laugh or cry! How?d that happen?
| theBoneyKing They finally stripped the contrib tag? Or was this self-inflicted?
| Papa Universe more of unknown post-punk: https://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?listid=181594
| zakalwe I AM THERE!!!!! As long as it?s not late July as I?m on a stag in Edinburgh the 23rd or somewhere around that date.
| Divaman Thanks. It's kind of a stress reliever. I love music, and I enjoy writing about it. If it ever gets to be too much, I'll back off for a while. But for right now, it's a pleasure.
| Divaman Meanwhile, you'll retire this identity with an even hundred reviews, he? Pretty nice output.
| Divaman Sorry to hear that. Will you continue using an alias, or is it a question of time now that you're a married man?
| Divaman Tch tch. Always breaking the front page with those 1/2-star reviews. What are we to do with you?
| Papa Universe oh, Fatima Mansions is his? I like me some Fatima Mansions. okey doke, will dig into him deper then
| Papa Universe Microdisney actually turned out nicely. Jammed a few tracks and they sound swell.
| theBoneyKing I liked Pure Comedy too but the length kept me from revisiting it. The new one is half the length so at the very least itll be more listenable. OPN... I think its just a problem of genre for me. I tried another of his recently and like GoD its decent but doesnt really draw me in.
| theBoneyKing Im hesitantly excited for the new FJM tomorrow, the response from the leak indicates people are finding it stronger than Pure Comedy, could it be a return to form? New Neko Case also looks to be strong, Natalie Prass could be an outsider hit (Ive loved the singles). Also tomorrow is a new one from Phil Cook (member of Hiss Golden Messenger) whose last album was great. And Ill give the new OPN a try but I doubt itll do much. Mazzy Star EP will probably be a throwaway 3/5.
| theBoneyKing I saw Lucid?s review, looks interesting, prob wont get to it for a bit though since there are a sh*t ton of big things dropping tomorrow that will occupy me for a good while.
| Divaman I've got "Estate Bottled Blues" on my short list for review, so it should be up within the next few weeks - a month. Haven't ordered "Black Market Crow" yet, but will sometime soon.
| Divaman I think the new one you just rated is actually a bunch of his oldest material from his first-ever album, redone and with some added tracks. I don't have a whole ton of bio info on him, though.
| Divaman Oh, you beat me to Black Market Crow. And it's another good one, I see.
| Papa Universe I predict at least a 4.5 for some of them from you. Or at least I wish for it.
| Papa Universe the ultimate Don't You Forget Us (part 1): https://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?listid=181515
| Pheromone That's an amazing list idea my man, I only wish I had the patience to do something like that - I reckon 2003 might end up my no.1 year but 94 would defo be up there. I'm hoping to get a new
| Atari Yeah hopefully some more people jump on it. Tentative 3.5, it?s great but there?s something elusive about her -I?m still digesting it
| luci interested to know what bands/influences you hear in the sound. quite a crafty and unique album
| luci I see you've noticed me spreading it around :p was hesitant to rec it to you because of the scrappy quality of the vocals, glad you're enjoying it! such a beautifully meandering release. makes me think of natural snow buildings, folk-era animal collective, neutral milk hotel, other touchpoints. and yes, the spoken word sections are astonishing.
| Frippertronics wew not only wrong about Lamb but Harmonium as well, you sure you're not 16?
| butcherboy cheers, Doof old boy.. band are the best kind of odd..
| Atari That Jennifer Castle album is gorgeous!
| TwigTW I'm an idiot. It's all right there on Bandcamp. Can't believe I missed that!
| TwigTW You found it! I've been looking everywhere... did you find it streaming somewhere?
| theBoneyKing The guitar work is indeed amazing, and the femvox elevate it quite a lot as well, theyre not the sort of thing you usually expect in more abrasive/experimental rock stuff. Havent paid close attention to the lyrics yet but they seem strong as well.
| theBoneyKing TFS took me by surprise, one of the best things Ive heard this year for sure! :D
| TwigTW Finally listening to Tropical **** Storm now. The name threw me off. I didn't realize it was the guy from the Drones. It's great.
| TwigTW Yeah, it will be a good week for catching up.
| TwigTW New Jukka Nousiainen on Friday... It didn't make the staff list. I can't imagine why ;-)
| theBoneyKing Huh, thats really strange. :-/ Never seen that happen before and hasnt happened to me. Hopefully they can restore it somehow.
| Dylan620 Agreed! The opener immediately struck me as a perfect song right away though, which is rare
| Dylan620 You weren't kidding about "Gustavo" - I detect a bit of proto-Benji in the lyrical DNA, though the musical approach is quite a bit different from what I was expecting. Also checked April today and really liked it, the opener left an especially positive initial impression
| ramon. I?m glad that?s how I impress you though I?m amused you spent enough time on a near empty account to get bored. Keep up the good fight squidward
| ramon. you are my favourite parody account on the site ?
| Dylan620 Hey Doof! I've been on a bit of a Kozelek kick lately - 5'd Rollercoaster last night, been revisiting Down Colorful Hill and Benji, and trying to get into Ghosts. Where would you recommend I go once I've given Ghosts some more time to settle in?
| zakalwe lol. You and your alts. Don?t know how you can be arsed with it.
| Divaman Was pretty sure you'd like that one. I have to work my way through the rest of his discography.
| anat I?m not ignoring your recs, been busy getting ready for my trip to the Netherlands and I?m sat at the terminal nowvery much engrossed in the aidan moffat album. had no idea it was basically a concept album and I love the story it tells.listened to most of TFS - first listen was very overwhelming so I need more time with it yet
| Divaman I especially like "Whistleman" and "Nehemiah James" on "Demanding", and "Armageddon Days" on "Estate"
| Divaman I've got an artist you might like. Check out Preacher Boy if you get a chance, either "Estate Bottled Blues" or "Demanding to Be Next". I'd classify the genre as Dark Rural.
| zakalwe A 0-0 v Panama It?s going to have to be done.
| zakalwe Doof/zak meet up in London some point during the group stage?
| zakalwe Shambles! Bring on the World Cup!!!!!!
| zakalwe WAHAY!!!!! it gets ya in the end. Wankers unite. It's my album of the year. Jazz is a hell of a thing to digest but theres just something about it. Suits all moods and its genuinely inventive and exciting. A lot is complete ****ing twaddle though.
| RadicalEd rec me your favorite beach house track.
| Drifter Did a little (long) write up on The Lioness if you're interested: https://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?listid=180406
| TwigTW oh wait, it's **** storm. I guessed the wrong expletive, lol.
| TwigTW will do... tropical s*** storm, oi vey.
| TwigTW I liked Benji... I'm probably just not in the right mood today. Sometimes record release day can be exhausting, lol.
| TwigTW I didn't like the new Mark Kozelek, but I see you gave it a 4... I guess I should give it another listen. It's the first one I haven't loved right away.
| theBoneyKing Just saw the current Tropical F Storm RYM rating and sampled a few sections and Im now intrigued so I may well give it a shot.
| BlazinBlitzer Absolutely! It definitely going on my month's end list and there are plenty of ways that it could've been worse (for example, it could've easily been a King Gizzard rip-off if it wanted to).
| BlazinBlitzer It serves as the perfect bridge between "Shellfish Toxin" and "Rubber Bellies" and it's just the right length and progression to transition from both tracks. Not to mention that I like it a lot as an individual track. I guess my main concerns come from the bookends and tracks 3 and 4. All of them were pretty boring to me, even with some shining moments from the bookends.
| BlazinBlitzer To clarify my opinion on TFS's first half a little more, I'm with you on liking "Antimatter Animals" and "Two Afternoons". Those two tracks have an undeniably enjoyable attitude and they bring out a lot of passion from the vocalists. What really makes the album as good as it is for me is the stretch from tracks 5-8 where they take boldly experimental departures from the first few tracks. I notice that you weren't really a fan of the title track, or track 8, but I kinda think it's a highlight.
| BlazinBlitzer If all of the first half was the same outlandish realm as something like "Antimatter Animals", I would've liked it more than Beyondless.
| BlazinBlitzer The new Iceage is an 8/10 while Tropical Storm is around a 7.5/10 for me, so they're pretty much the same quality. I had way more fun on Beyondless , but Tropical Storm has a much more unique style to them so I definitely got something fruitful from each record. Despite the stunning second half from TFS, I was much more critical of them than Iceage because their looniness and creativity on that half would have vastly improved a fairly dull first half.
| theBoneyKing I must add to take what I say about 7 with a grain of salt because it does feel like it could grow on me big time - I just always enjoy power tripping when my (initial) opinion of an album is much lower than others. ;-]
| theBoneyKing Theyre going pretty well thanks. Im now halfway done - admittedly still not sure what I want to do when Im done, figuring that out will be my challenge for the next year. The campus is great, its spread out quite a bit and I live decently far from most things but I dont mind the walk and theres a strong community in the area I live. There are definitely other music fans, Im on the radio station so there are some people there - a lot of pop/hip hop fans though, unsurprisingly.
| theBoneyKing Ive seen some buzz on F Storm but I dont think Ill bother tbh - really doesnt seem my bag and Im now home for a little over a month before heading back to campus for the summer so I may not have as much time for music.
| theBoneyKing Idk about that, we both love Teen Dream, and I love TD and DC for completely different reasons. TD is their best indie pop moment, by far their strongest songwriting on that one; DC is their best true dream pop moment, with their best atmospheres and songwriting playing second fiddle (though still being strong). 7 does feel like something new for them, Ill give it that; the most sonically interesting thing theyve done. But on first listen it didnt have the lovely atmosphere of DC or the depth of
| theBoneyKing Saw Ryley open up for Calexico last week. I think he played a couple new songs - nothing mindblowing, I expect a 3-3.5 from him.
| theBoneyKing Ryley Walker is next week. Only other release I care about this week is Brent Cobb. Idk about 7, just finished it and it feels pretty average for Beach House. A tad better than TYLS but thats all. I only loved 2-3 songs and almost every song had something I disliked. It feels really overproduced and static to me. Theres room for it to grow but I dont expect it to go above a 3.5. First listen enjoyment level was light 3/5.
| theBoneyKing Surprised at your initial Beach House reaction, I thought all the singles were pretty lame but Im about to press play on the album and Im open to their growing on me. Cautiously optimistic.
| rabidfish yea last track is really dope. Man don't try to force ratings lol. Last year i didn't find any 4.5-worthy albums. Some years are just slow. This year's been good so far, and what's coming looks promising, too.
| rabidfish mmmh, the 2nd half of it is pretty bland. tracks 1-5 is like a 3.5 overall, but tracks 6-10 are a 2.5.
| butcherboy had the faintest hope arctic monkeys were going to pull a left field turn for the better.. but album is ass marmalade..
| zakalwe Where?d you hear of him? Irish, depressed and disillusioned with rock n roll ticks all the right boxes.
| butcherboy warm bodies, iceage, sons of kemet, jean grae and quelle chris, a few DIY punk EP's.. year is considerably weaker than last year was at this point, and there aren't any big releases on the horizons for me, aside from the Protomartyr EP..
| rabidfish i'm diggin it so far, yea... First 2 tracks are dope, and the instrumentation's been top notch so far, even if some other tracks are not so fun. Like you said, tho, i see lots of people being turned off by the somewhat deadpan delivery. I'd take it over faux-'soulful' everyday, tho.
| rabidfish this fries'n'burgers gal reminds me of the last Timber Timbre that was oh so heavily underrated.
| luci I didn't feel like the new one was a major change. I'm admittedly biased since I didn't go in expecting to like it (vocals are the biggest issue). The music is pleasant but makes me want to hear Have You In My Wilderness instead. I'll give it another spin, on the edge of a 3/5.
| luci i told you her discog is lame lol
| SandwichBubble I'm just messing, no need for apologies. I saw your rating for both on RYM and got a bit itchy. Might try the Friedberger next time I'm in the mood
