| someone hi there, i need your genuine opinion as a user with Thievery Corporation in the faves list: do you listen to their whole discog and jam your noggin off or is this more of a nostalgia love that initial four-album run? cause i like me some Thievery as much as the next cop, but honestly cannot opt for returning to anything beyond Cosmic Game too often
| Jethro42 Hi Twig. Would you intend to vote for M4? It's still time!
| Jethro42 Hey Twig, me and bgillesp were thinking about something. The 20th spot is available. Would you have a rec? Would you want to participate?
| Jethro42 I've seen you dig Shamblemaths. They just released another album. Very good, complex stuff!
| Jethro42 I simply forgot you, bro. And when I thought of you, the game was mostly over. It would have been much appreciated if you were a part of it. Next time!
| Jethro42 Hi Twig, there is a tourney coming up. Are you interested? https://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?memberid=280733
| Jethro42 Same here, buddy. Your entry seems interesting for the least. I couldn't ever miss a tourney. Keep that prog coming!
| Friday13th Got a prog album for the tourney? I need another now that Mythodea jumped in late.
| Dewinged Just seeing your message made me happy Twig! Stay around! Yeah I knew about the album, hadn't planned to check it but if you say it's good I'll make space for it!
| Dewinged Twig!!!! Did I see a shout of you telling me about the Re:Ex album or did I dream it!? :D hope you are doing well my friend! Miss you around these parts!
| Jethro42 Hello TWIG, I appreciated your comment into my thread. I know I'll be lurking for a while, so I will see you commenting from a thread to another. You know what? If I see a prog tournament popping up, I might join in. Bye bye friend!
| Atari Just a heads up there?s a new Nadia Reid track and it?s fantastic
| Sniff :eyes: might do something with actual effort this year. might be looking at some free time to spend ^^.Check Jeremy Udden - Three in Paris for some cool sorta free jazz trio stuff
| SandwichBubble So there's another one! And you have a fairly high number of album/band edits too, so that goes in line with my theory. | I swear, a lot of users with fewer edits are having issues uploading, but I can't know for sure. Might do a shoutbox survey or something.
| Divaman OK. Well, feel free to jump in any month if you feel like it.
| Divaman Hi Twig. I was wondering if you'd care to contribute a song to November's Song of the Day list (https://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?listid=189442). This month's theme is gifts -- a song that you like that was originally recommended to you by someone on Sputnik.
| luci the dominik eulberg lp is sweet, glad he's back. make sure you check the barker lp this week, fav electronic of the year
| luci really liked his ep last year. this new track is great, thanks for that
| luci nice, she makes the smoothest rnb. discovered her from this electronic single last year, infectious track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luTGJMSmLxg
| luci going through my digs list i see, glad you found some 4s in that bunch
| Jethro42 There is a time I was more into Magma. I've approached them with an open mind, and I liked about everything I heard of their music. But as time goes by, my ears got tired of their style. I have to be in a good mood to appreciate as much as I did in the past. I know both Udu Wudu and Mekanik Destructiw Kommandoh since the early 80's, then after, Magma Live and all the rest up to 2010. i don't know if all my 4/5 would stay that high today. I will revisit slowly but surely the ones I've rated.
| Jethro42 Ahh Magma...So hypnotic, so repetitive...It's forgivable since it's pretty good. Not always consistently good though. Luckily here, the spoken words are not only pronounced in the Zeuhl language, but also in French. Thanks for sharing, Twig!
| Dewinged 2 minutes into the Fire! Orchestra and loving it, my god, it's so good!
| Sowing Right as I started backing off my initial enthusiasm I began to find little things I love. Can't make up my mind!
| Sowing well I'm only on my second listen myself. certain songs are SO good (like 1996) that it convinces me I must be missing something with the tracks in between. like you said, more time is needed. I am hoping to review this, right now it could be as low as a 3.5 or as high as a 4.1.
| Sowing ehh nvm maybe you're right this album started out incredible but I'm on my second spin and now it sounds far more pedestrian
| Sowing You had your plastic mermaids rating right the first time
| Dewinged Oh nice! I have the vynil cause they used to be in Alone Records and the owner is a good friend of mine. They are amazing. You should check Cuzo too if you have the chance, same label, but instrumental psychedelic stoner.
| Dewinged Digging the Snow Ghost's quite a bit. Very interesting. Didn't know it was another project of Throwing Snow (which makes sense looking at the name haha)
| Dewinged Had to look it up cause I didn't even remember I rec'd it lol. Oh man, I've been so busy lately, couldn't even work on the new Deweekly list today. Will try to have it done for tomorrow :( Already behind with reviews and don't even get me started on new releases. Barely keeping up.
| robertsona Give J.S. Bach most of the credit, but that's definitely the best recording of the Mass in B Minor there is. The Vocale Gent is the vocal performance group started by this guy Philippe Herreweghe, who is a Belgian conductor who is at the forefront of the "historically informed performance" movement, where people play on period instruments and try to make their singing sound like how people sang in the 1600s or whatever. He's the best conductor of Bach out there imho!
| neekafat Jam his band The Swell Season dude, their t/t might be my favorite folk album
| neekafat this is so insane, completely different from everything I've heard from him
| neekafat I'll be sure to let you know what I think!
| neekafat I haven't heard it yet!! I'm saving it for a time I can just throw it on and chill since it's not on spotify yet (:
| neekafat yeah you liking that new Glen Hansard? Thanks for posting that link (:
| Jethro42 Ok thanks a lot Twig. i just opened an account. Do you have to change the password for each and every accounts? And does it work even if I'm using the same email adress?
| Jethro42 Thanks Twig, everything is clear now. But do we absolutely need to have a main account for credits and purchase? I never had the intention to buy music from Bandcamp. Also I don't even have a Bandcamp account. I go there when music directs me there. Can i have several accounts without having a main one? And is it easy to know if you are under TW3 or TW4 for instance?
| Jethro42 Not sure to understand well...a main account? Which one is yours?...A bunch of accounts? Could you name me some of these accounts? Do you mean accounts such as i Tune, progstreaming, Deezer and Spotify?? And what do you do if albums can only be found on Bandcamp? And when ''I hit maximum plays'', do you mean for Bandcamp? As you can see, i'm not an internet expert, and my English has its limits :/ So please, what you mean in other simplified words? Thanks in advance.April 5 11:52 AM
| Jethro42 Hi Twig! I went to erase the Bandcamp's cookies from Google Chrome, and it doesn't work anymore. Have you noticed? Now, it seems we have to erase each and every cookies. Well, at least, they ask if we want to erase those of the last hour, last 24 hours, last seven days or all the periods. Do you know another way to erase only the Bandcamp's ones?
| Dewinged Just piggin back from Trif's comment but Twig, the apple music version I have comes with the videos. So happy when I found out.
| Trifolium Hmm yeah, could see it become a 4.5 too. I'm very impressed with how she pulled it off. I mean, you hear it's not her usual thing and I can imagine how classically trained singers would do it totally differently, but it works very well. Next step: the DVD.
| Trifolium Just gave Gorecki a go with Beth, excellent album man, oof. God I love her voice. Beautiful piece too, I'm happy I got to know it. How'd you feel about it? A 4 too I see?
| Divaman Hey Twig, you're a fellow 80's new wave lover. You should check out the new album by All Hail the Silence. They're another one of Vince Clarke's proteges, very Depeche Mode sounding. Their album is my favorite of 2019 so far. Seeing them in a few months, opening for Howard Jones and Men Without Hats.
| Trifolium YES! Good news. I'll listen as soon as I can!
| Dewinged Really liking the Alexia Avina, just checking the previous one and is also pretty good.
| Trifolium Appreciated! I hope to see a shout very soon, haha, although I guess it'll be another week or so. Pity!
| Trifolium Noooo man! Sucks. Was too curious to hear it.
| Dewinged Thanks Twig! And ok about Beth Gibbons (that would explain why I cant find the damn album anywhere lol)
| Sniff Ye. It is almost a 4 for me
| DoofDoof From the internets - "Char is an old British English (in fact I would say English English) slang term for tea". The joke was chai is a word for tea but I am not using the word chai I am using another Brit slang word for it...I think! The sentiment remains - I noticed you had it on a 4, it is probably good at what it does but it really was not doing anything for me.
| Sniff Kids these days don't appreciate jazz
| neekafat oh **** yeah dude, glad it's out! Was hoping to do a review for her unless you wanna do the honors (:
| Sniff i put an ampersand in the previous post... apparently not a wise choice
| Sniff god damn sput quirks. https://pitchfork.com/thepitch/william-basinski-interview-bringing-the-disintegration-loops-back-to-life/
| Sniff he did a quite interesting q
| Dewinged It gets a bit repetitive from half onward but like you say, the atmosphere they create is pretty good.
| Dewinged Enjoying the Chasms album a lot Twig, thanks!
| SandwichBubble Hey, that pornhub album already exists on the database: https://www.sputnikmusic.com/soundoff.php?albumid=313832 | I already asked for a merge in the meds thread so just quickly repost that soundoff :)
| Sniff New Jeff Ballard album out if you are interested
| Dewinged Oh man, same here. And remember I told you I was gonna go softer on this year's releases? Well, there goes my plan. I haven't even completed any of the January lists yet haha.
| Dewinged It's there! 4th album from the top! ;) Are we looking at the same list? The one for the 18th? No worries anyway, I'll add the other one. The album is good btw, listening to it now!
| Dewinged Ouch Twig, sorry, just realized that the Buke and Gase album is in the staff list. Do you want me to replace it with any other album?
| Dewinged Downloading all their albums as we speak lol
| Dewinged Holy crap! The band is half of Motorpsycho!! Sounds amazing, great find!
| Dewinged Oh it was that easy hhahaha, I feel so dumb, should have checked on YT. Gonna check it out, thanks Twig!
| Dewinged Instead of "Who" I meant "Whoa!" lol
| Dewinged Who all the covers of Spidergawd are so beautiful, did you see them? I wanna check it out but there are no singles yet on Apple Music, guess I'll wait until tomorrow. In the meantime, I just found out that Bruno Sanfilippo had a new piano album, I already told Cycle but I think you may like it too.
| Dewinged I skimm'd over that Uluru album and not sure it's gonna be for me, it's 100% instrumental right?
| luci true, but every song is a gem. compact works :-)
| Dewinged Right!? Great album although it went out of radar for almost everyone. I am here trying to gather stuff for the first week of January but it seems pretty dead lol, even more than previous years.
| DoofDoof Thanks for the heads up - have you checked it yet? It's very nice indeed - one of those albums I feel I already knew on first listen somehow
| Sniff Did you read the quiteus review for this? https://ketomusic.bandcamp.com/album/blackened-pool it's av veryvery good album actually
| Sniff "new is always better"
| DoofDoof Will it add to the 'experimental' slice of my pie? Because that description tells me it should ;D
| DoofDoof Looks interesting...the King dropped a bollock?
| Dewinged Tell me you heard that Liela Moss record last week. it's so gooood!
| DoofDoof I can?t think of anything that?s less my thing than that song/album/band ;D
| Atari hey there. This new Laura Gibson is very nice!
| Sniff Finally got to that Exit North album. It's so so great
| Divaman I agree completely. It's very electro.
| Divaman I'm liking the new Gosta Berlings Saga album. Very Tangerine Dream. Thanks for letting us know this was out.
| zakalwe Enjoyed it, more smooth crooning than jarred biting but that is to be expected. Will definitely be sticking by it and giving it a few plays.
| Sniff anything noisy and jazzy goes!
| Atari Glad to hear it man! I?ll have to spend more time with Cat Power. I?ve been on vacation so I?m falling behind right now on music haha
| Atari nice rating for the new Adrianne Lenker. If you haven't heard her band Big Thief you should check them out. I love her voice
| Sniff Thalia Zedek is good per usual
| Atari damn I just talked to my dad and he likes Loretta Lynn. he pointed out there's a movie about her (also called Coal Miner's Daughter) with Tommy Lee Jones and Sissy Spacek. Gonna have to get on that!!
| Atari God I love Loretta Lynn. Coal Miner's Daughter is too good, love how charming and optimistic she sounds. makes me sad it's not even in the database :/
| Atari listening to Coal Miner's Daughter right now. I can see the differences in her voice being from 1970 and her being so much younger, but I still think she sounds remarkably great on the new album given her age. I'll prolly make it through her entire discog at some point - cheers!
| Atari Haha, what?s your favorite album by her? I really love the opening title track on the new one
| Atari Yeah new Loretta Lynn was pretty good. Never heard her before
| Atari it's on my phone. I heard the first track and seemed solid but haven't ventured further yet
| Atari haha, gonna give that new Marissa Nadler another listen now. I love her, but I've just been on such a country kick lately :) and yeah that Shannon Shaw was pretty nice!
| Atari Rec of the day: the new Stephanie Urbina Jones. Country pop with Spanish influences!
| Dewinged Just saw your 2.5 for Cruel Diagonals lol, and here I was excited I found smth cool. I am listening to it right now for the first time.
| Jethro42 Oh I see! It must have been a lot of emotions for Ian. I'm sure he took some room to go with his own stories. He's such an entertainer. Did the taped messages stop him from talking between each songs? I guess he found the time to talk as much as usual.
| Atari her voice is so nice! can't believe I had to add it to the db and it's not even on RYM
| Divaman Yeah, I'm right there with ya, heh heh.
| Jethro42 Damn right, it's the 50th anniversary! What are the taped messages from former band members? Were they musical excerpts or winks or kind of instrumental overdubs?
| Atari here's a nice album to hold you over until that Marissa Nadler drops (check Lauren Balthrop - This Time Around). I just added it to the database - very, nice listen so far!
| Divaman Wow, 50th Anniversary for Tull, 50th Anniversary for Yes. These classic bands just get older and older. Glad WE never age, heh heh.
| Atari Oh yeah, I?ve heard the 3 new tracks several times haha. Been looking forward to it for a while!! :)
| Divaman Saw Tull, did you? Glad it was a fun show. You're right, in spite of vocal issues, Ian remains a great showman.
| Jethro42 The two times I've seen Tull, -in 2005 and 2007 I think-, they separated the show in two parts. One acoustic and the other one electric. Ian (almost) didn't seem to be affected vocally, and it seemed they could play anything they wanted, and they did it well acoustically and electrically. I'm glad they're still enjoyable in 2018. And the day they'll stop playing Aqualung and Locomotive Breath, it's gonna be RIP Jethro Tull :)
| Atari got a rec for you my man: check Elise Davis - Cactus. Nice country-pop album that I might review if I find the right words. If not, I'll be sounding off ;)
| Jethro42 Hope you had fun seeing Jethro (Tull). Yes he still moves like a (little) sports man and he looks like a chef d'orchestre with his flute. I love the way he juggles with it, and he still plays it in an unique rocking style. His throat surgery didn't affect his powerful flute...only his vocals suffers of it, but the band adjusts the sound and keys to make it easier for Ian. The setlist is always enjoyable too. Keep on p/ Twig, mate!
| Sniff That just makes you an above average listener and connoisseur of fine arts
| Sniff I'm not sure about the new Oliver Coates tbh. It's fine I guess but nothing very special eh?
| Divaman Any time. I thought you'd probably like it.
| Dewinged I probably should give it another go cause I really liked their sound, it's just the histrionic singing what really turned me off :(
| Sniff That Eulberg, can he ever do anything wrong?
| Dewinged I checked it actually! And I like some parts of it but I really really can't get past the guy's way of singing.
| Atari Haha, right on man! Lots of good stuff released lately :)
| Sniff Oh yes electronics and jazz is always a winning combo for me
| Sniff Yes I saw that. Might be a while til I get to it but I think I'm gonna dig
| Divaman You know, I'd recommend you check out the new Tom Bailey album. It's really good. You're a Thompson Twins guy, right?
| Divaman Excellent. I'm looking forward to that one.
| Atari nice Swingin' Utters rating ;)
| Divaman Finally getting to listen to that orchestral Erasure album, and I hear what you mean. Nice.
| zakalwe Ah. Cheers man. What on Earth is he playing at? Leaving sput to 1 Father of the Bride on rym. The bloke has clearly gone mental.
| Atari not familiar with Devon Welsh, I'll give it a shot. cheers for the additional rec!
| Atari cool thanks for the rec man :)
| Atari got any recs for something similar? also idk about you but Model Trains is one of my favorite tracks. whole thing is really nice though
| Atari yeah, it's exceptional! I recommended it to Lucid so hopefully some more people jump on it. such a smooth voice and love the lyrics
| Sniff He got some theme going there or what?
| Dewinged Really loving that Bloods album, Twig, thanks for the rec!
| Atari I'm not too picky ;) I like most music, some stuff just more than other. I'm listening to Dawn Landes - Bluebird and it's quite lovely, a lot more chill than the new one. thanks for reminding me of her
| Atari nah, I hadd my last shout to you because I changed my mind haha. after finishing the album the lyrics are a bit better than I gave them credit for. found some of the songwriting to be stronger in the second half. a solid 3 at the very least and def worth a listen
| Atari I actually don't remember commenting on that lol but I'm checking her new album now. instantly sold on the opening track "Meet Me at the River". cheers :] so much good country songwriters this year!
| theBoneyKing I like the darker, more psychedelic country rock tone and rootsier style or Rain Plans so much more. The songwriting is also much stronger.
| theBoneyKing I see you also rated the new Israel Nash album. Was my first experience with him, wasn't terribly impressed, but I've checked out Rain Plans seeing you and some others rated it highly, and damn, that's quite an album!
| DoofDoof It's quite different - he's got rid of some of those clean Beegees harmonies and made it a bit more dreamy
| Atari Here?s one for you: Mikaela Davis - Delivery. Needs more love, not even in the database yet ;)
| Atari That album by The Innocence Mission is lovely - cheers for the quality rec!
| Sniff Damn the never ending stream of new sweet releases
| Sniff Ever thought about starting a career as a mash-up DJ?
| Sniff I was in the right mood for it... check onyx collective btw
| Sniff No liking the new Björn Torske I see
| Divaman This thing about making orchestral albums for '80s new wave bands must be a trend. Just found out that a new Orchestral remake of Erasure's 2017 was released last week.
| bgillesp Twig!! Go jam the new album from The Bamboos! I think you'd like it a good bit
| Divaman Thanx. Think we have two lined up, one headed by Flock and one by Belinda Carlise.
| Divaman I'm supposed to see Flock this summer, headlining a bill with six '80s bands or so. I didn't know about these, though. I agree that their first few albums have held up nicely. Was never that big a CC fan to begin with, but I'll pass it along to my wife. Thanks for the fyi.
| Atari yeah I'm really liking that Offa Rex, cheers man! She has such a versatile voice, a lot of times she sounds a lot different here than her solo stuff. and the male vocalist is cool too
| DoofusWainwright Ooh, just to say, the Perry Blake debut is great - more similar to his second album than 'California'. I think his Bowie/Walker-isms might be at their strongest on this album...so it could be your favourite! A solid 4.5 rating for me
| Atari giving it a listen right now, on track 3 and it's definitely nice so far :)
| Atari yeah didn't captivate me as much as her new one, but still pretty solid. felt the second half was stronger!
| DoofusWainwright The NIN was alright, yes a small Blackstar influence - but people rating it as one of the best 'albums' this year. Hmmmm, not sure at all. NIN are more a live act now, after The Fragile they've been releasing two or three songs per album of a sufficient quality to be added to the live set. The Rolling Stones of industrial rock ;D
| Atari yeah I'm checking her debut now and it's also very good. vocals aren't quite as distinct so far, but still gorgeous. the lyrics are actually standing out a bit more though for a first listen!
| Atari God, that Chaney just keeps getting better!
| Atari glad you liked it, good sir! agreed her voice is really something special :]
| DoofusWainwright I missed a whole load of NIN and only got on board again with the ?just ok? Hesitation Marks. Honestly, if you took the 10 best NIN songs since The Fragile that?s all you?d really need, he recycled his own ideas a lot. Still can?t help but like a bit of NIN all the same :D
| DoofusWainwright I?ll check the album on Friday but Trent has always loved a Bowie melody
| Atari have a rec for you! check Olivia Chaney's new album, "Shelter". pretty great stuff :0)
| DoofusWainwright Also, the new Melody?s Echo Chamber is really strong, possibly top 10 of 2018 quality for me on a first listen. Great summer album.
| DoofusWainwright Picking up a copy of Perry's s/t debut on CD next month and some people think that's his best - but for now I'm putting 'California' on a 5. Has really grown on me, wasn't sure at first, love it now. All the faded glamour....that bittersweet nostalgia of remembering a perfect holiday...etc etc
| zakalwe It?s a good one and always gets a spin every once in awhile. Haven?t really heard his other stuff.
| DoofusWainwright Been listening to 'California' too, very different but also excellent - he's really got something (had something?). Also - I don't ever think Ihave set up a rec list where the first rec I try ends up a 5 :D
| DoofusWainwright That rec, that rec...it's getting dangerously close to a Doof 5 Twig. Inspired selection, interesting it came out in 1999. Feels more of a '00s release. Love it.
| Atari thanks for sharing those streams :]
| DoofusWainwright I purchased as he's an artist I want to support and I'll probably never see him play live ;D It's good...maybe not quite as good as the previous one. An optimistic 4 for now, maybe more a 3.5.
| DoofusWainwright Just like the last album the Jukka gets stronger towards the back end for me. This album is a bit brighter - the title translates as ?no more cold and dark? so I guess it?s literal ;D
| theBoneyKing The Jukka Nousiainen doesnt seem to be on Spotify... Looks like theres a bandcamp stream but hopefully he does a US release soon.
| Sniff Yes it's on my checklist. Good looking out
| DoofusWainwright Well this upcoming week is sorely lacking in top tier releases so good, will 100% check that one out ;D
| Atari ooh, didn't realized you bumped that Caitlin Canty to a 4 ;)
| Dewinged Listening to that Elza record now, loving the instrumentation!
| Sniff You'd probably dig it more than I did. Was too much u2-sounding rock for my liking
| DoofusWainwright I feel you, there were so many great releases today but I had to stop checking new stuff and give the Beach House some repeat plays. A man has his limits. Saying that - try the Aidan Moffat soon as you can. And maybe the Tropical **** Storm for something totally different ;D
| DoofusWainwright It?s a little more like ?Benji? I guess, but then I?ve rated most recent Kozelek stuff at a 4. Early days but I really enjoyed it. Will return to it a few times next week.
| zakalwe Yes dude! I was excited after hearing Message To My People prior to the records release but the whole album is absolute quality, dare I say even better than Africans which is one of the best recs I?ve ever had thanks be to you.
| Divaman I liked them OK, but I'm not a huge fan. So far, I actually think this is a more complete album than either of their other two back in the day (even though there's no single song on here better than "Feed the Tree". But I'm kind of surprised I like it as much as I do.
| Divaman I don't know Twig, at this point, I'm liking the new Belly album a lot better than you and Doof did.
| DoofusWainwright Yeah, the RF Shannon I thought was less exciting - he sometimes reminds me of a more soundtrack-y version of Cass McCombs. Hopefully the Damien Jurado is better. I'll also try the Venetian Snares, and something about the Eleanor Friedberger attracted me on my first spin.
| DoofusWainwright Yes! Autotune Kurt no less. Good album, will have a clearer idea just how good after a few more goes. What's your 'album of the release week' so far?
| Sniff https://singwithmi.bandcamp.com/album/nameless
| Atari Cheers. If you have any singer-songwriter recs I?m always on the lookout as well . Nice rating on that Laura Veirs btw, it needs more love
| Atari hey man, glad to hear it's growing on you ;] I'm also enjoying Natalie Hemby right now if you're looking for more!
| Sniff https://rroo.bandcamp.com/album/schizo-romance maybe?
| brokencycle That?s part of the albums charm haha! Highly recommend Kindo?s new album that just came out ? Happy However After?
| Atari I?ll be curious to hear what u think of the new Caitlin Canty if u get around to it :]
| Dewinged Tx a lot Twig! Will add them now!
| Dewinged Twig do you mind adding those two albums (Sly
| Dewinged I see , no worries! It sounds interesting actually so I wanted to rec it on the list. It's alright though, swapped it with another album.
