Acting as a precursor to the folk-influenced Horses In The Sky, Pretty Little Lightning Paw sees A Silver Mt. Zion attempt to play a more art rock style of post-rock, and results in some pretty lovely, if inconsequential, moments. The opener "More Action! Less Tears!" is a predictable, yet very well executed, post-rock crescendo straight from the GY!BE handbook, but the other three songs here have a nice focus on Efrim Muneck's vocals and ambience rather than traditional post-rock crescendos. The closer "There's A River In The Valley Made Of Melting Snow" is the best example of this, bringing a subtle, yet beautiful, background melody with a heartwarming vocal and lyrical performance by Muneck. It's a good, albeit slightly uneventful, slab of post-rock that works well as a preview of A Silver Mt. Zion's output in the near future.
