3.0 good | Insurrection | September 24th 12 | Simply put, this album is a mess. Muse graduated from ripping off Queen to ripping off Jamiroquai, U2, Skrillex, and even ripping off themselves. There are some great songs admittedly, such as the ones where the bassist does the lead vocals, "Animals," and "Supremacy," but ultimately they're not good enough to overshadow the godawful singles and they don't even touch the worst songs off Absolution. Regardless, it's a fun album to listen to and if you're a Muse fan or are just in the mood for mindless pop-dubstep-classical influenced alternative rock, it's worth checking out.

4.0 excellent | ADAMWD | September 28th 12 | I was actually pleasantly surprised by this. There are a lot of solid songs, and a few great ones. No bad songs on this album, unlike The Resistance. In fact, more than a couple songs reminded me of their old material and would fit in nicely on those albums. Follow Me -> Showbiz | Animals -> OoS | Explorers -> BHaR/Absolution | Big Freeze -> BHaR/Absolution Supremacy and Panic Station are both fun, well written songs, and the two ending pieces mesh pretty well and provide some decent closure to the album. The only glaring negative for me is the lack of flow in the album, which is something Muse has always struggled with.

3.0 good | toxin. | August 21st 12 | Fuck you, Muse. I was supposed to hate this album. Everything you released before the album rwas shit, and then you churn up cool songs like 'Animals'? Anyways, this album is quite a rstep up from The Resistance. It's easy to find flaws with how derivative (from Queen rparticularly), how cheesy, how bombastic, and how messy the album is. If you go into the ralbum with an overcritical eye expecting shit, you will hear shit. Personally, I had no rexpectations for this album but wanted to like it. And guess what? I liked it. A song like rthe divisive 'Panic Station' is clear proof to the fact. The song is by no means fantastic. rThere are several flaws with how cheesy the "funk" or whatever is. However, it's catchy, and rI truly think if you want to enjoy the song, you can do it. In this way, it's similar to rsomething like One Direction, which perhaps is evidence for how far Muse has fallen. rNevertheless, for me at least, Muse manages success in places where I expected none.

4.0 excellent | GoldenGuy444 | May 26th 23 | In retrospect this is the dividing line between Old Muse and New Muse, where the British Alt Rock trio swapped for an Operatic Fuzzy Nightmare of silly antics and increasingly bombastic fluff. rThis hits a good last reflective meeting of the two before going all in on that later direction. It has the ridiculous cheese that is seen and amplified in the following decade while still retaining the restraint and classical touch from their first decade. Sure, it jumps from genre to genre in an extreme whiplash of conflicting tastes, and at times is a bit too much for its own good, but it all works in spite of its lessening restrain

4.0 excellent | NorwichScene | October 11th 12 | Good album, they experiment with a bit of U2, Foo Fighters and Skrillex as well as the classic Muse.
1 Bumps | Bump |
2.0 poor | breakingthefragile | October 8th 12 | Sort of like an electronic opera, The 2nd Law is an over-dramatic, and at times over-
produced exercise in Muse's regular neo-prog symphonies that soar to the rafters, with an
additional handful of tracks heavily based in primarily dubstep-inspired electronics.
Naturally, this makes the The 2nd Law a very unbalanced and incohesive album, as Muse
makes efforts to tread waters unfamiliar to them while sticking to the territory they know
best, but fail to find a central ground to connect their experiments and their definitive
qualities. And with genres as drastically different from each other as dubstep and symphonic
rock, the result is an uneven collection of contrasting elements and sounds that don't
compliment each other or even work too well together for that matter. Though the execution
and presentation of Muse's ideas on The 2nd Law is clumsy, the tracks are still
somewhat interesting and enjoyable for what they are. The guitar tracks provide the grand
arena rock sound Muse has established for themselves, and while the synth-laden dance music-
infused songs are train wrecks for the most part, there is still something of a peculiar
entertainment to be found in that they display Muse's most severe change to their sound yet.
Overall, the most respectable trait about this album is how it mainly shows that Muse are
always trying to push their sound in new directions, even if they're largely unsuccessful in
doing so.

4.0 excellent | Fernando Alves STAFF | October 4th 12 | Exploring diverse musical textures such as funk, dubstep or 80's pop-rock (Queen or The Power Station come to mind) Matt Bellamy & Co managed to release yet another interesting and unpredictable release. "The 2nd Law" may not have the irreverence and energy of Origin of Symmetry or Absolution but it certainly deserves our open-minded attention.

3.5 great | SphinxesPaw | October 2nd 12 | It's really not that bad, guys. Even the brostep has its entertainment value. Not the best, certainly, but this was largely experimental, and it worked pretty well for the most part.

4.5 superb | Schlangengift | September 26th 12 | Not gonna lie, some of the tracks had me smirking. And while definitely not their best album I find their usage of electronics to be second to none. A solid approach though. But that's just me...

3.5 great | steadyriot | September 26th 12 | Nothing compared to Absolution era, but still a handful of good songs that will, if nothing, translate very well to a live environment. It seems Muse found their old synths and arpeggiators- the songs that feature them are generally the better ones on the record.

3.0 good | gryndstone | September 25th 12 | It seems there's actually too much variety for anyone to really enjoy this. Consistency isn't a word The 2nd Law has in its vocabulary, despite the deceptively named "Prelude", leading one to believe they are at the meat of the album, when really it's the worst part. I liked Panic Station and The 2nd Law songs, though. And I kind of liked Madness don't judge me
1 Bumps | Bump |
3.0 good | YourDarkAffected | September 24th 12 | I thought this would be absolutely terrible based on "Madness", "Survival", and "Unsustainable", and those are for sure, but the songs that the bassist sings in (also wrote?) are actually pretty good and not Muse-like at all, which is a good thing. Some of the other songs suck like "Supremacy" and "Panic Stations", but the album overall is better (and seemingly less indulgent) than The Resistance. It's a step up imo, but nothing that touches Muse pre-2006 (though the bassist songs should hardly be compared to anything Muse)

4.0 excellent | oneirology | September 24th 12 | People have been bashing the album before having a listen, seemingly too quick to dismiss
the new album based on opinions of others, but I'll say its definitely 100% worth your time
for a listen. Being only my first listen, I feel as if I like it more than I did hearing The
Resistance the first time. And I know it'll only grow on me as I hear it more. Good music,
great step forward from their last album.

2.0 poor | Gene Gol CONTRIBUTOR | May 17th 24 | On this one, Muse make a fucktonne of singles heavy tracks that make sense standalone, but feel like a loosely connected playlist together. All of that is wrapped in a bizarre package of misinformed and ill-inspired contemporaneous wobble apparition of dubstep. Plus, despite the several fun and infectious songs, this may have the most vapid of their lyrics ever, meaning nothing, going nowhere. At least their dumbest political takes have a motivation behind them. Yikes: the album.
Bump |
2.2 poor | Erwann S. STAFF | November 2nd 20 | Ah, the infamous. Epic, charged with a political sci fi concept, this could have been cool, but it's obnoxious. The main reason is their will to flirt with influences they maybe didn't fully digest. Queen-isms epics sit next to brostep gloubiboulg, and some tracks contain multiple elements that do not necessarily work together - symphonic brostep, nice. It's a shame 'cause it could have been a great, interesting album, but it feels like they rushed the process, with ok parts and absolutely horrible ones (first part of the t/t ugh).
Bump |
3.5 great | charlopiano | August 16th 20 | The 2000s was an important decade for alt rock because it introduced and perfected electronics. Many bands like Radiohead made a shift towards more electronic sounds. Muse refused to be part of that revolution. So after The Resistance, which wasn't particularly well received, I feel like Bellamy jumped back on the electronics to try to be a crowdpleaser. Problem being that by 2012, not that it was too late, but if you make the switch to electronics, you gotta stay there. The sound in the 2nd Law isn't reused at all in Drones. The 2nd Law is weird. While The Resistance felt like a symphony, 2nd law feels like a discombobulated album with snappy, poppy electronics in them. Songs like Follow Me are a perfect example. Standouts include Isolated System and Explorers.
Bump |
1.0 awful | MisterDoe | May 6th 20 | Muse isn't a band I particularly like that much, yet they tend to disappoint me several times. And with the dubstep-inspired tracks, paired along with the usual arena-rock melodrama; this just isn't gonna cut it for me.

Bump |
3.0 good | 3waycrash | January 27th 16 | I take it back, this is the most overblown Muse has sounded. They bring back their rock elements, but also thrown into the mix are way over-the-top instrumentals, electronic influences, and even absolutely unnecessary dubstep. While The Resistance was bland and shallow sounding, The 2nd Law is packed and overloaded in a bad way. Matthew Bellamy obnoxiously flaunts his voice all over the place, and it's too much and off-putting. Never before have I been tempted to just shut off the music with Muse playing. There are things to like here (more so than with The Resistance), but unfortunately Muse are still into overindulging in themselves. This would be higher if it just wasn't so overbearing and messy in its sound and nature. The 2nd Law manages to be better than The Resistance in some ways while still managing to be just as bad.

2.5 average | MaggieG | September 8th 14 | I'm one of the few who likes The 2nd Law. It's certainly nowhere near Muse's best album but the album is still thoroughly enjoyable and retains the band's traditional symphonic rock elements. The album starts out strong with its first three tracks which are some of the best the band written in my opinion but it loses its grasp with 'Survival' which feels too much like a Queen cover and goes too over the top in its approach. 'Follow Me' has to be the worst Muse song ever as it tries to merge in dubstep into the mix and failing dramatically. The album picks itself up again in the last half with the synth dominated ballad 'Explorers' which is another one of my favourite Muse songs but the last two instrumental composition tracks fall back with the over the top mix of Queen and dubstep that doesn't work one bit. I definitely don't hate this album and on the whole, it's an impressive release from the band. But if it was trimmed down or reworked a bit, it could've been as amazing as Origin of Symmetry or Absolution.
Bump |
3.0 good | Tunaboy45 | April 21st 14 | While it's far from their best effort, this is Muse's most experimental album to date with rsome fantastic tracks like 'Supremacy', 'Panic Station', 'Survival', 'Animals' and r'Madness'. (Yes I like Madness)
Bump |
2.0 poor | sarcasgnostic | November 20th 13 | There's not really too much musically offensive material on most of the tracks on The 2nd Law for those familiar with Muse's sound, unless you count being remarkably formulaic and predictable as musically offensive. I actually like Panic Station and Explorers, despite them being practically made of cheese, and I kinda dig the dubstep influence on Follow Me. What makes this album amazing is how spectacularly it derails itself and completely falls apart so unforgettably in it's last several tracks.
Bump |
3.0 good | Nash J! | July 7th 13 | The two songs sung by Christopher Wolstenholme are great additions to the album, as are the songs "Supremacy" and "Animals." The rest of the album is pretty average.

2.5 average | Drekorend | March 10th 13 | A well-varietized album taking queues from many genres, including electronica, funk, and symphonic rock, to Queen-like songs like Survival, and some unfortunate dubstep. The band really let loose on this album, in ways good and bad. As good as the music sounds, the lyrics are all cliché.
Bump |
1.5 very poor | Ziio | February 5th 13 | Muse experiments with their sound on almost every song. Though most of the time it doesn't reach to the heights they want, The 2nd Law is still better (marginally) than their previous album. There is definitely a couple classic Muse songs off this album to make a very short EP.
Bump |
1.5 very poor | Polyethylene | January 2nd 13 | Muse's trashy mix of cheesy guitar riffs, space-themed lyrics and Freddie Mercury-style histrionics can at times be great fun to listen to. On The 2nd Law however the cheese and the drama is cranked to 11, totally at the cost of any enjoyment. This album is almost entirely forgettable, save for the couple of tracks (Survival, Unsustainable) where the band verges into unlistenable territory. The addition of wobble bass on tracks such as Madness, Follow Me and Unsustainable (funnily enough the three singles thus far) was a soulless and ineffective attempt to jump on the dubstep bandwagon, yielding results more tragic than anything else. Stay way clear of this, folks.

2.0 poor | Mr_Coffee | October 4th 12 | I was expecting a giant turd, but this isn't as bad as its haters claim to be. It actually has some pretty good tracks ("Madness" is a great song and "Supremacy" has some damn good moments). The problem is that for some reason Mr. Bellamy here likes to fuck things up with some stupid over-the-top arrangements and multi-layered vocals that drag the whole album down. And there are some just plain awful songs like "Survival" and the title tracks. Otherwise, The 2nd Law it's an average effort, way better than the suckfest that was The Resistance. And did they replace their drummer with a robot? Supremacy, Animals, Survival and Isolated System are pretty good, the rest is pretty forgettable (in the case of Unsustainable, just unforgivably bad) or just better-done on their other albums. Bellamy's riffs are pretty much the only thing keeping this from being a giant pile of shit. Muse, might be time to hang it up.
