it's another krallice album - disorientating, pummelling and ferocious in all the right ways but with better production and tighter execution. for those that claim it's more of the same yeah, of course, krallice sounds like krallice, why is that a surprise for any band to sound like themselves? there are differences that are very evident if you actually listen.

riffz. It's as if Wolves in the Throne Room took Weakling's atmosphere, while Krallice took the riffz. The problem is, WITTR still had some meaty riffs, while Krallice offers riffz, and nothing but riffz. Monotonous riffz, at that. It's got that spacey vibe and all, but it feels like the record rehashes ideas throughout its entire course.

As far as their old style goes, Years Past Matter is the pinnacle of that sound for Krallice. Taking the songwriting improvements seen on Diotima and furthering them, this is not only their most diverse album of their old style, but is also their most mesmerizing and consuming. They truly perfected everything they possibly could about their trademark sound, and adding influences from ambient doesn't hurt either. Everything they've went for since their self-titled debut has come to full fruition here, basically. I suppose there are "riffs" on this thing, but they're all a means to an end, as is the drumming, bass, and vocals (the latter of which are the best they've ever sounded, bar none). The end is, of course, an atmosphere of chaos made entirely of these textures and absolutely incredible sustained energy. It is a good thing that Krallice decided to switch up their style a bit on their next record, because their original sound met its logical and exhilarating conclusion here.

The way this black metal outfit is able to capture emotion while maintaining a very technical edge is nothing short of amazing. I highly recommend this to any fan of black metal or even death metal.

I was expecting something bad, especially since I disliked Diotima; but I was pleasantly rsurprised. This album rather than an evolution for the band is a progression from Diotima, rtaking the best elements and adding them more interesting ideas &/or substance. The ratmosphere it projects is pretty good and very enjoyable at times, the production completely raccentuates this, but still there's something missing idk. Maybe the new wave of virtuostic ratmospheric bm is just not my thing. Good at times, but not great. 2.5/5
