And now for something different. With "Canada Songs", the former members of As the Sun Sets had started to stray from typical grind and indulged in a more noisy, experimental sound with high-pitched guitars that could be mistaken for synths. They have almost completely abandoned their grindcore roots with "Hell Songs", trading throat-ripping screaming for trippy Jack White-ish vocals. The guitarists have gotten more comfortable with their new stylings, and the rhythm section is fabulous, with hyper-technical drumming usually being accompanied by a nice rolling bassline. Daughters have taken a step further in to the world of noise rock, and it is a splendous treat to listen to.

The main thing to know about this cd is that it shouldn't be in the grind section. Daughters have definately taken a step away from the grind/noise/hardcore band people fell in love with. This new attempt is a good musical effort, but the vocals are really love or hate. The only way to really experience the new Daughters is to check them out yourself; listen to fiery from their myspace to check out vocals. The weird mix of grindy instruments (yah i made up a word) and acid tripping elvis vocals can be entertaining if looked at in the right light.

The pro: it doesn't sound much like a lot of music i've heard before.
The con: that's not a good thing, as i think the vocals are annoying, and the music goes nowhere.
Quirky and spastic can only get you so far.

impressive drum work, more impressive guitar work and jazzy outputs makes this by far their most
interesting and cool release...In fact all instruments and features do stand out. Cool adding of
the new type of vocals, definitely leaving the convergeresque genre in the previous making it more
original and creating their own identity. This one gives me great Calculating Infinity vibes on
tracks like X-Ray f.e.

My argument to Extortion's "Sick" does not apply to "Hell Songs." Seeing their own music entering stagnation and boredom paths, the band risked all his concept entering into other genres, seeking sonorities inside the Doom, Sludge and Hardcore Punk world. That's exactly what extreme genre bands should do.

What kind of people would we be if mathcore never assaulted our ears and bodies? That's a rhetorical question, so don't answer it. Let's move on to something more interesting to say, albeit this is one of those queries in admittedly awful taste: can you imagine Elvis Presley drowning his sorrows one afternoon, and then in the middle of the night - rather than collapsing on the bathroom floor - he jumps off a very, very tall building? You could argue Daughters' Hell Songs is that scenario in music form. For the most part, it's glorious, effective, and at times will render the hellhounds speechless.

This is the sound of a band that has just lost it's mind and my God, it's fantastic. They perfectly balance creativity, insanity, and intensity. And, Lord knows we've all shit ourselves after the opening riff of "Cheers Pricks". Best grind album ever.
