Ignore the rabid fans: Pavement won't blow you away. They do a lot else: writing great songs, playing them pleasurably (albeit with a "slacker" attitude), getting their point across. Second effort Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain was the greatest example of this, but, as sloppy as it is, Wowee Zowee gets it (mostly) right, too. It's disjointed, and its first third is quite misleading (and boring; the album picks up with "Grave Architechture"), but the influences are delightfully scattered, allowing the album to sound not much like Crooked Rain, but still a lot like Pavement. Favorites change every day, from the country-fused first-third standout "Father to a Sister of Thought", to the Nirvana-sendoff shortie "AT&T", but, on a given day, any one of these eighteen songs will present itself as a standout. Sometimes critics say that, after a director wins the big prize and soon after releases a passion project made just for themselves, they made "the kind of movie you'd make after winning an Oscar". Wowee Zowee is the kind of album you'd make after releasing Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain.

The pinnacle of anti-perfection receives a perfect score. Ah, the world makes sense. To my ears, this is the ultimate indie rock record. It covers just about every mood in clever manners that can be both euphoric and grating simultaneously. Amazingly enough, it all ends up feeling pleasant! It appears that the tracks were put into a completely random order, and it just works. The album still flows perfectly when put on shuffle, and every track (including the jokes) is a winner. Wowee zowee.

The least-focused of the five Pavement albums. Borrowing heavily from breezy stoner rock, 'Wowee Zowee's best songs are generally chilled, lackadaisical and vaguely hypothetical ('Rattled By The Rush', 'Grounded', 'Motion Suggests Itself', 'At & T'), with its worst stirring themselves up to lo-fi, sludge-rock.
