I don't normally like Electronic music. Although it's often shiny and brilliant on the surface, it usually disguises a shallow musical base that expires after about 3 listens. Fortunately, Sweden's The Knife have managed to break the mold by crafting a cohesive, fantastic album that sheds pop hooks for long lasting appeal. The synth tones here are simply beautiful, especially when contrasted with the apparent harshness of the vocals. Check out the first two songs and you'll be hooked.

A disturbing, eerie beast of an electronic album, but without enough musical and lyrical depth to make you want to return to it again, and again, and again.

The Knife - interesting lookin guys, and occasionally interesting music. What the band does well is make beats on the comp where most of their music is made, but this hurts them in the long run. This makes live shows hard to do and thus limits them. Dispite their limitations the album is solid. "Like a Pen" and "We Share our Mothers Health" are definetly highlights.

I was won over by Like A Pen, the song that got me into this band. Music video is so interesting.rAs a whole, best album I've picked up in a looong time. Love it

Regardless of the cool and hypnotic use of vocal filters and shimmering electronics, half of these songs annoy the fuck out of me. "Marble House" in particular just saunters around while the brother-sister duo does some interplay which makes the track, oddly enough, boring and lulling but not in a trance-like way. More like "oh fuck this is boring."

Believe me, I love the music here. They've got a DIY, low-budget take on 'Werk-esque electronica that's actually very enjoyable, and displays a lot of invention. There's a sense of humor about the whole thing, too. I always appreciate that. But Jesus Christ on a pogo stick, the vocals are annoying. Mildly, yet gratingly, out of tune, they have no power to them, barely any charm, and they mask the lyrics they're meant to be bringing to the foreground. Can we have Jose Gonzalez sing the next album? As in, all of it? Pretty please?
