3.0 good | Dalton DuBois | December 30th 17 | Honestly one of the most boring albums I think I've ever heard with an average rating this high on Sputnik. Sure, it's good, but there's no wow factor to it. Marrow of the Spirit and Ashes Against The Grain both have better atmospheric qualities to them, and the instrumentation just isn't impressive as either of those or this band's contemporaries. Really perplexed by the adoration for this even after seven listens, and I probably always will be.

0.0 | DeathPiercedMe | February 27th 13 | The most atmospheric, emotional masterpiece ever, this will hit you like a fucking sledgehammer right to the balls, dude. If there were ever an album that merited a play or two from every motherfucker out there, let it be The Mantle as it will take you on a ride unlike any that you have ever been on. The lyrics are one of the best things about the album as they paint a picture of nothing more than darkness and depression without ever resorting to being the same reused and tired "hail satan, mother fucker" bull shit that has been spun since the dawn of time by bands that claim to be part of the black metal scene. That being said do not expect black metal when you enter this despite what you may have heard, bitch, as this is as far removed from traditional bm as it gets. Instead what we have here is a post-metal album with elements of ambient music, black metal, hard rock and just down right awesomeness with one of the most harrowing vocal performnaces ever put to record. The mixture of clean singing and black metal shrieks is one of the best things about this album. Also worth noting is that many of the songs are quite long, with one stretching to 12 minutes, but they hold your attention for their entire span and never once sound like they are growing tiring, repetititve, restrained or dull. Each song is a mother fucking masterpiece unlike any that has ever been put out and you should totally buy this right now or download it or steal it or just do whatever the fuck you have to do to hear it as it really will blow your mind, bitch. Best album ever recorded? almost certainly.

5.0 classic | EatThatPhonebook | May 18th 10 | Unbelievable. Beautiful ,haunting, emotive, just amazing. I never expected something this good from a band like Agalloch, whose reputation is more of a doom metal band, more than progressive. The folkish passages combined with the heavy distorted parts is genius, even though not a new thing. I recommend it especially to whoever likes black metal, folk metal, and progressive. A masterpiece, one of the best of the decade for me.

1.5 very poor | AnEpicDeath | March 26th 10 | Agalloch are undeniable in their originality, which I greatly respect. But originality is
not enough, and Agalloch have crafted one of the most boring albums to grace my ears. While
there are some highlights, such as the wonderful acoustic guitar solo in "...And the Great
Cold Death of the Earth", the memorable "Odal", various portions of the longer tracks, and
the high-pitched, vaguely Celtic plucked lines in "A Desolation Song", the entirety of the
album is drenched in unignorably highly mixed, rhythmically identical, often suspended
chord-based acoustic lines interchangeable not only with any other song on the album, but
even any given CCM/Christian Worship piece. (That last line might sound like an unfair dig,
but I'm serious; the acoustic guitar work would be right at home in a Matt Redman or
Hillsongs United shitpile.) The lack of tempo or build also detracts, especially given that
the songs are longer than most progressive metal tracks, as do the poor vocals, though they
are only present in roughly half the album. Add to this concoction aggravatingly poor
production, and you have an album more appropriate as background music than a serious
musical studypiece. Recommended for ambient fans and die-hard early Opeth fans.

4.5 superb | nick962 | September 5th 06 | The term Doom/Folk Metal (as it was described to me at first) turned me a bit off; not the Folk, nor the Metal, but the Doom... Never hearing much that i enjoyed from the Doom genre, I was definetely sceptical about diving into anything by this artist. But the truth is, Agalloch is so much more than Doom, Folk, and Metal combined. Atmosphere is an incredibly important factor in music, and Agalloch pin it perfectly. Mainly acoustically driven (my type of style) with obvious folk influences drew me in and kept me seated the whole way through. Though the majority of this album is instrumental, most of the vocals that do appear are roughly growled, or somewhat spoken/whispered. Most lyrics being very dark, combined with the way that they are expressed only add to the beautiful mood and surrounding of the album. Amazing music, highly recommended to anyone and everyone.

3.0 good | Gene Gol CONTRIBUTOR | September 12th 24 | I wish I had discovered this album prior to all the other ones that proved copies of Agalloch's style, for at this point I am too jaded and unimpressed, too stubborn to find all the probably important and influential moments that fuelled folky black metal for years to come.

5.0 classic | Erwann S. STAFF | February 24th 20 | If Pale Folklore embodied the slow Autumn fading into Winter, The Mantle is the part preceding the white season's peak. Calmer, yet still menacing, and the omen of darker and more difficult days. This atmospheric change is represented by the replacing of the doom riffs for folky ones, which make for an equally gloomy yet different ambience. The core of the sound (black, folk and progressive metal) is still present, but the now more present post-rock and folk tints make this album the most profound journey the band has ever embarked on. This is a band at its most cinematic, painting a mystic trip into the wilderness. Flowing seamlessly without ever taking a break or meandering for too long, this is the type of record that will always be (at least in my heart) heralded as a timeless classic because of how ancient it sounds without ever being outdated. This is not a representation of nature, this is nature itself, in its purest and most indescribable beauty. The band showcases their pantheistic view of the world, and one can't help but agree with them when they are capable of evoking such majestic landscapes with no more than their words and instruments. Going beyond metal, beyond music, this is a work of art that will deeply shake those who dare to get carried away. If this grand panorama before me is what you call God, then God is not dead.

4.0 excellent | tom6 | September 1st 11 | One should not try to dissect The Mantle in short takes. It's hard to pick out individual highlights, as the album unfolds so fluently and cohesively, but that doesn't mean it's not memorable - rather, it's a majestic, immersive experience. Vocals and distorted guitars are less polished than they could be, which actually adds to the quaint folk atmosphere, in a way reminiscent of Opeth's Morningrise. Overall, a deeply moody and elegant piece.

5.0 classic | YRI | April 11th 21 | A defining moment both for Agalloch and Black / Folk Metal as a whole.
Bump |
4.0 excellent | SinNanna | May 18th 20 | Often heralded as Agalloch's greatest musical achievement among many people, fans and critics alike, with which I unfortunately don't exactly share the same passion. The Mantle has a great recording and a pretty ambitious length with tracks that are generally very neo-folk focused with flashes of their metal influence popping up here and there providing a bit of contrast. Despite a lot of beautiful passages making their way on this record, I find that a bit too often the songs get a bit tedious and lose my interest after a while. I think the music would've benefitted from a more prominent black metal influence for some extra dynamics, because one long winded, similarly greyish folky song after the other just gets me a bit of ear fatigue after a while. Above that, I generally find the vocals to be a bit on the flat side, and some of the more melodramatic whispered spoken word bits don't do a lot for me either, which was also a problem for me on their debut as well. Still, a fairly enjoyable record, but to my ears just pretty inconsistent in terms of execution.

4.5 superb | PistolPete | March 21st 17 | Not being a real fan of black metal, I used to look upon this album as an unreachable hurdle that I just assumed I would never understand the love for. Now here I am, like all the other Agalloch fanboys/masturbators slapping a 4.5 on this beast of an album. Some powerful shit, and even those who cringe at black metal vocals like myself can find something to like here as those are kept to a tolerable level.

5.0 classic | Have you tried jamming HELCARAXE CONTRIBUTOR | February 27th 17 | This took awhile for me to truly get into, but bloody hell it's gorgeous. It's sweet, somber, yet warm and embraceable all at the same time. It only encompasses peace the farther you get into it. Furthermore it's all done so in a way that's not truly describable.

3.5 great | EasterInTheBatcave | January 3rd 17 | Miasmic, sprawling, atmospheric, and one of the best albums of the 2000s. The Mantle is an utterly engrossing work, combining post-rock, folk, and black metal into a lengthy, but compelling, record. Reportedly, the band wrote the record "thinking in images and how sound might express those images," and that approach is evident in the album's cinematic quality. Crystal clear production (much improved from Pale Folklore) helps, too.
Bump |
5.0 classic | ShaquilleONeal | September 21st 16 | You deserve a perfect rating when you completely engulf the listener into your album's atmosphere and are able to make them feel like they are inside the world "The Mantle" is trying to portray. This is a must listen for everybody who can hear. What an experience.
Bump |
4.0 excellent | Alabaster Jones | May 1st 16 | Going further towards the cleaner, yet still wholly windy and cold, side of folk-influenced black metal and neofolk that Of Stone, Wind, And Pillor established so well, The Mantle sees Agalloch transforming to a more folk dominated sound, while still retaining some of their black metal roots. The thing to recognize, I believe, about this record is that it's not some massive monolith of raspy folk metal epics. Rather, it's a quite delicate and nuanced album, with the moments of freezing ambience meaning just as much as the tranquil strumming of acoustic guitar or the drifting riffs. Thus, the songs are not at all difficult to digest, and while some might overstay their welcome, for the most part everything is tactfully written in a smart and almost progressive manner. Yet, for all the coldness it wishes to portray, I feel that the record brings the feeling of emptiness across well. I never thought I'd say something like this, but the album pretty much ends up exactly where it began, and that is a good thing.

0.0 | TheFourthCircle25 | June 8th 15 | Who knew black metal could be so beautiful? This was the evolution that Agalloch needed to take for their career and is a near perfect follow up to Pale Folklore. Here, Agalloch paints a portrait of a world soon to collapse, where the existence of God is questioned and the evil of man is revealed, and it makes for some incredible, beautiful music combining black, folk, and avant-garde metal. The atmosphere is powerful and the lyrics are hard-hitting. Overall, while I still say I love Ashes Against The Grain better, there's no doubt that The Mantle is following close behind.

2.0 poor | Skull917 | July 27th 14 | What is dull folk doing in my metal? A lot of worn out and uninteresting ideas stitched together with ambient sounds in between. This sounds like a post rock record that an adult contemporary band might put together and the lyrics were like reading the diary of a goth poseur that he wrote in college. By the 8th track the banality of this wasn't boring me anymore, it started to piss me off. Judging by the ratings I guess the 4 pop chords loop and generic sad tone really touches the young hearts.

4.5 superb | Commortus | January 7th 09 | Agalloch use beautiful, melancholic clean electric melodies and deliberate acoustic strumming to create perfectly dark soundscapes. You Were But a Ghost In My Arms is the standout here - I get the feeling that if the last line were screamed forcefully that You Where But a Ghost... would be the best song ever... but sadly, Agalloch refuse to reach for that climactic freakout moment. Regardless, this is perfect atmospheric music, and I have no right to criticize this for being uniformly dark and haunting, because that's what Agalloch do.
Bump |
4.5 superb | CrazyFool84 | October 27th 08 | There is something so special, encompassing and unique about Agalloch's second full-length effort, The Mantle. A pretty far cry from the band's original black/folk metal roots, this does show heavy signs of evolution and experimentation, while still managing to retain the original roots of the band's music. Combining elements of folk, black metal, doom metal, death metal, and ambiant music Agalloch creates a niche in the musical world all their own. The Mantle is perhaps this band's magnum opus (at least up to this point) and greatly broadened my musical tastes and opinions. For a highly impactful record and enlightening musical experience, Agalloch's "The Mantle" may take a few spins to really delve into, but you'll really be glad you did in the end.

5.0 classic | Dakota West Foss STAFF | April 23rd 08 | Upon first listening to The Mantle, one may wish to shrug it off as a repetitive acoustic outing that goes nowhere. If you do this, then it is only your loss. The Mantle is a somberly epic affair that knows exactly what it is doing even if you don't. The album almost seems to repeat itself in a pattern (long song, then an instrumental), but then the second half of Hawthorne Passage and Great Cold Death of the Earth come up and produces one of the most satisfying climaxes ever. This is an album I can come back to again and again for more and truly deserves the Classic rating.

The clean guitars are pretty and hit in the right spot, the drummer is perfectly placed, and the vocals are awesomely beautiful. The only bad thing about this I could find is at the end of a couple songs its a bit wierd, like my one of my favorites "In The Shadow Of Our Pale Companion", this little girl starts talking in Swedish(i think), and some dude says something I can't comprehend(sounds like a frog). Besides that this cd is perfect.
