And this is where legend was born, along with a new direction in metal. I can hear these main influences on Bathory: Venom, Motorhead, early thrash/speed scene plus street punk rawness. Quorthon`s brutal shrieking vocals and over-all black atmoshere made the difference. This is classic album, although i don`t give 5.

The production really kills it for me. Yes bad production usually benefits bm but it doesn't work here. The guitars have almost no punch which really hurts the albums quality. The music itself is top notch though and definitely worth a listen

Terrible production is commonplace in the aesthetic of early black metal, but I find it quite offputting. It's like somebody is playing this from the opposite end of an empty corridor. It is cool to see the gap between oldschool metal and black metal being bridged though.

86/100. Raw as fuck. Quorthon's vocals are raspy and demonic, and fit the overall aesthetic of the band perfectly. I also love the fuzzed out production, as well as the razor-sharp guitars and relentless drums. Really terrific stuff.

About 20 minutes of very raw music sounding like a more brutal version of Venom. Definitely a birth of a legendary band but on the time of this release Bathory had still much to improve (which they did on following records)

Black metal's first true album isn't exactly a triumph given its very poor sound quality and average musicianship, but goddamn is it sinister in atmosphere, and the vocals and low production values would define the genre. Historically important and a good listen.

Honestly this is just ok thrash metal. I would love to say this album has influence on the early black metal scene but it just does not. So basically it is just another thrash metal album that is just ok, nothing special to add to the genre. Plus, the recording quality is just horrible where it can be annoying after a while to listen to it. Yes we all know poor recording quality is a trademark of black metal, but it does not become annoying when listening to it most of the time.

In my opinion this is the first real black metal record. Venom's Welcome to Hell was extreme influential sure but it was Quorthon that shaped the BM specific raw sound in his debut. Back in 84 this was the most violent, extreme and darkest album you could get.
