Necrophagist's masterpiece. It might sound like wankery to some, but I argue that it works perfectly in the context of the music. Most of the time, the "wank" fits right in with the music rather than sounding out of place or showoff-ish. Plus, the compositions are just wonderful. Brutal death metal mixes with elements of tech death, neoclassical, and progressive metal... all with a beautifully melancholic edge that brings out a level of emotion that most technical death metal acts would sacrifice for technique. For instance, "To Breathe in a Casket" gives the listener a genuine feeling of paranoia and overall fear that relates to its titular subject matter, and "Mutilate the Stillborn" fits its own title with one of the most brutal tunes on the entire thing. This grew on me with every track and I need to re-listen to it again. It is sometimes very hard and heavy, sometimes much softer, but always blissfully dynamic and tech. It also features a handful sympho guitar solos which I normally loathe, but the album manages to make me actually like most of them which in itself is an achievement. The vox are fantastic all throughout, and the prod is great this time (at least on the 04 re-edition I heard). The fact that this is a one man effort is astounding, as every instrument takes the spotlight in turn - I particularly enjoyed the brief bass lines that shine through here and there. I liked how 1 just goes at it right away, but wasn't a super fan of the high pitched soloing guitars over everything. Thankfully they stop in 2 which I like a lot better, fun and funky but not super brutal - which isn't a bad thing and just shows the record is very dynamic. I love the intro on 3 but I wish the track unfolded into something far crazier and chaotic, it feels a little too restrained. After that, 4-8 felt a lot heavier and made me like this record more by the minute, turning it from a 3.8 nice but not fantastic album to an apparent tech death classic. 5-6 are particularly hard and jammy. I'll come back to this. 4.05

Necrophagist are one of the most essential technical death metal bands....Nice debut with excellent musicianship. But high tech isn't everything. The best moment in the album is the guitar solo of "Advanced Corpse Tumor" in my opinion.

This album is all about one thing: masterful guitarwork. The riffs are all great and shift between being brutal, groovy and technical or some combination of the three. And the solos? Simply amazing. I don't know if there is a more impressive collection of tech-death guitar work than this.

I think it's great that Muhammed's vocals are more varied on this than Epitaph, and it really lends power to some passages. The guitar playing is feels more varied than on Epitaph, too, and although the solos aren't quite as good, the riffs and grooves are much better than on Epitaph.

Tech Death Metal is what Necrophagist does and they do it well. The lyrics are nothing special for this cd, but it really doesn't matter in Necrophagist's case the music speaks for itself. The growls are really deep and extremely brutal. The guitars are amazingly technical and have no flaws whatsoever in my eyes. Its hard to believe that one man could record all this by himself. Muhammed is without a doubt a genius. This is a must have for fans of death metal or any kind of technical music, this will always be one of my personal favorite albums.
