Folk base with some toppings of drone and noise all brought together by blunt, to-the-point nature-centric lyrics. Major props for the instrumentation and lo-fi production as this is key to allowing the aforementioned blend of style to work in the first place. The haziness of the actual music accompanies the lyrical themes and imagery brought up in Phil's singing. Good use of ambient guest vocals on a few tracks, I feel like it might become a bit monotonous without them. You feel right alongside him as he describes things and the track variance is strong on this album. That being said I don't find myself revisiting this album all that much. Strong tracks in Boat, Pumpkin, Dragon, Emptiness, This and Planets. Shoutouts to the longer tracks as well, they do not bore despite the extended length.

sauna is simply fantastic. the slow, soft folky guitars and lo-fi production give the album this wintery feel. wintery in the sense of you get cozy and warm inside whilst the snow patters upon your wooden home, not the bitter cold frost. sauna also has moments of deep darkness or depression, especially on tracks like 'spring' or the t/t. these tracks bring more of mount eerie's emotion out, which tends to have a more bitter/dark/cold feel to it. sauna is a fantastic album that uses great technique to create a great overall feel.

The deep breath into lengthy crispy-crackly warm drone to start things off, along with the all-singular song titles, give the impression this album may be a gamechanger for Mount Eerie. Not quite. But if you dig his established prototype of ragged homebody nature-iffic folk noise, it delivers, per usual. Previous black metal junctures have drifted towards alterna-feedback fuzz, ghastly femme-angel vocals provide some accompaniment, there's more long warm drone shrouds, and many-a murmured musing about things like discarded gourds, how he spends his morning, and of course, the always-prevailing nature.

I've always been interested in people that are in touch with their surroundings as much as they are in touch with themselves. It's this sentiment that makes Sauna an engrossing listen, as the sparse, lo-fi eclecticism of the record is just flowing with these vibes. Even from the opener, "Sauna", in which a drone swirls around a recording of a crackling fire, the atmosphere is excellent. The album is an interesting mix of lo-fi indie folk, drone, and small hints of black metal and ambient. Therefore, though the atmosphere is sparse, it never becomes boring or a chore to listen to. There is plenty of experimentation here as well. The vocals here are soothing and comforting, and the use of female vocals in a few of the tracks is a nice touch. The lyrics are about relatively simple things, but they are put together in such a way that you get to appreciate the significance of each of them. Overall, a great album from Mount Eerie that should be heard by indie fans everywhere.

Highly probable my rating will go up as the year goes on. Great production, the usual spellbinding vocals and lyrics, and lots of contrast in texture. Plus if I am not mistaken there is a large Steve Riech influence on this album, best of the year so far
