I am a big fan of Bjorks work, an amazingly gifted artist whose lack of predictability defines her. She claims Volta is a really fun album, I got the feeling that she was extremely unsure on which direction she wanted to go in. The songs that she enlisted Timberland seem to greatly outshine the others on this album, in an attempt to create some form of creative consistency. Because its the creative consistency of each Bjork album that holds it together; the deep and brooding beats of Homogenic and the Bare sounds of Medulla. I personally think Volta lacks this and for that it fails to grab me. I think if you could split this album into two there could be two amazing albums: one with Timberland and another with a slow haunting Bjork. This album just doesn't feel complete to me.

Good album, but falls short when compared to "Homogenic" and "Vespertine", for example. But there's some amazing tracks here, like the powerful and ubpeat "Earth Intruders", the dramatic "The Dull Flame of Desire", the strangely wild and epic "Wanderlust"and the sad "Pneumonia". It's an overall good experience that could have been better.

First "super weird" Bjork project I've heard, off the bat those first 2 tracks grabbed the hell out of me and I wanted to rate this higher.. But as it went on and the guest singers started to appear my opinions quickly soured (although not MUCH.). The Timbo production is understated, and I appreciate that as this is the era where he started to just kinda be ass at it (or out of touch, i guess.) but the tracks he does produce are some of his weirdest. I still love this; probably more than I should. The production styles are just something only Bjork could do and the experimentalism is to be appreciated, can for sure say I've never heard another album like this. It's like Bjork trying to be M.I.A.: and I love both of them, so.

A really disappointing Bjork album, with only sparse redeeming qualities; her voice remains soaring, the opener Earth Intruders is at least okay, the hook from Innocence was pretty okay, and the acoustic guitar in Hope had some okay little melodies going on. Note the consistent use of "okay" when describing the supposed high-points of this project, which end there, unfortunately. Declare Independence is potentially the worst Bjork song I've ever heard, and My Juvenile feels like an endless, cheap, uninteresting hook with some twangy instrumentation underneath; needless to say, an utter drag to get through. The other tracks either completely fell into the background or were simply annoying.

Her only album that lacks any artistic urgency. It's the only "just another Bjork album" of her discography. Most of the tracks are nice, but not really inspired either. - 6.0

I have trouble saying any post-Sugarcubes era Björk album is outright bad, but this one comes closest. Most of the songs are too long, too meandering, too forgettable - even Björk's voice, which is usually so immaculate, sounds unusually hoarse here.

My only real problem with this album... well, my couple problems... are: 1) The fact that each song is either tied to together by an unrelated outro, or ends immediately/abruptly for the next song. That works well once, on the transition between 'Dull Flame' and 'Innocence.' 2) The lyrics aren't as good. Especially on 'Hope,' the worst song she's ever done, in my opinion. The music is great, but I skip it because I just hate everything else. 3[kindof]) The singing isn't as consistently amazing. 'Pneumonia' features a dreary minute-long, nearly-monotone intro, and pretty much throughout it contains extremely boring music/vocals.
But I do really like this album all in all. It's not as bad as many critics say. So what if she isn't doing as complicated stuff as she's done. There'll never be another Homogenic, or Vespertine. Get over it.
