4.5 superb | Brady Hayes | February 27th 16 | Coming off of perhaps my favorite post-rock album of all time, Yndi Halda follow up their masterpiece of a debut with something completely different. It is an album that may take patience at some points, but the band is armed with a grand assortment of instrumentation that aid in the uplifting crescendos. This Very Flight could honestly be one of the best songs they've ever done.

2.0 poor | Gene Gol CONTRIBUTOR | July 4th 23 | Approximately 10 years after their debut, the celebrated orchestrock band have released a follow-up, on which they have changed not a damn thing, except for the addition of vocals. Nothing is particularly innovative or impressive, nothing quite sticks out what hasn't already been said (albeit without words) on their debut, nothing seems necessary, even the vocals add very little.

3.0 good | J.C. van Beekum | June 25th 20 | One would not think that they could live up to their mesmerizing debut, but I didn't expect the sophomore to be so comparatively subpar.

3.5 great | Bedex | March 27th 19 | Even though I 5'd EEB I don't dislike the different direction these guys took. 'Helena' (especially the intro) and the opening track sound great. Track 2 and 4 not so much though, pretty forgettable. Overall this style fits them well too and the shift is not too stark, but this just does not match the quality of EEB. Seeing songs from the two albums live is night and day. They can do better. 3.7

4.0 excellent | Benjamin Kuettel EMERITUS | December 15th 16 | After ten years, Yndi Halda return with a beautiful debut album perfect for the month of summer. While some musical passages might go on longer than they need to, the build-ups are handled well, crescendoing into gorgeous soundscapes and bursts of energy. There just enough vocals to add color without overpowering the instrumental focus. Overall they are used rarely and effectively, especially adding to the beauty of the album's first few minutes. Violins and other strings give a classical feel reminiscent of Sigur Ros. While not quite reaching the heights of Enjoy Eternal Bliss from a decade before, Under Summer can be counted among the essential post-rock albums of the year.

3.0 good | Monheim | November 24th 16 | You know exactly what you're going to get with a Yndi Halda release, but it's still pretty nice to listen to regardless. Better for background music than active listening, I'd say

3.5 great | SAPoodle | March 21st 16 | Considering it's been 11 years since the debut, this was always going to be a disappointment on some level. Enjoy Eternal Bliss has slowly risen to become one of my favourite albums of all time but there was no way this was ever going to justify a decade long wait. rRegardless, it's an enjoyable outing with some of those familiar Yndi Halda elements rearing their heads every now and then. The highlights are "This Very Flight", which is the song most in tune with the sound of their previous outing, and "Golden Threads from the Sun" which has some gorgeous melodies. The opener is solid but nothing to really write home about and "Helena" strays after a beautiful opening few minutes. rAll in all a good effort from a band that most people had forgotten about but let's hope it won't be so long before their next one.

3.5 great | Amnesian | March 11th 16 | I really wanted to love this but it just falls way short of their debut for me. The high points are there for sure but a fair amount of this record just drags and just didn't leave a real impression.rWill keep spinning this every once in a while in the hope it really sticks but for now it's just a nice bit of background music.

4.0 excellent | Alabaster Jones | March 5th 16 | It's kind of strange hearing a new Yndi Halda album in 2016, but here we are. The men of Enjoy Eternal Bliss fame have clearly been working on their craft, because while Under Summer may not be on the level of its predecessor, it's hard to call it a step down. More of a progression, really, as it relies on quainter, more lovely pieces than exploding crescendos. It may not exactly bring anything new to the table as far as post-rock is concerned, but small details that pepper the passionate execution of the record, like the heavenly vocals on opener "Together Those Leave" and the gorgeous plucking on "Golden Threads From The Sun" show that the band knows what works and performs them near flawlessly. They're going to rely on evocative moments and emotionally affecting passages rather than experimentation, and that is totally fine, especially when it's well done. And, aside from some slight meandering on "Helena", this is extremely well done. In short, Yndi Halda is back, and after a decade plus, Under Summer is a welcome and excellent listen.
