In general, the first half of The Alchemy Index points to success. There are questionable aspects to both discs, but in general the cons are vastly outweighed by the pros. The Fire disc is a great exploration of the heavier moments on Vheissu. The album is explosive and intense, with Dustin ripping his vocal cords to pieces while the rest of the band unleashes their heaviest material yet. Songs like "The Flame Deluge" act as the most brutal work Thrice has ever created. Songs like "The Messenger" and "Backdrift" are surprisingly the weirdest, blending together electronic influences into heavy, harmonic minor chord progressions. The Water disc, excepting its opening track, is nearly flawless. Interestingly, it also continues a strand that was started on Vheissu's slower, more pensive tracks like "Atlantic." It's a collection of beautiful and wistful songs that all have lush and stunning arrangements. The Water disc feels exactly like it was recorded underwater. As a collection of songs, this album is amazing for nine out of the twelve tracks. As a concept album, it's halfway to becoming an amazing cycle. There are a few flaws and the second half of the collection to worry about, but so far Thrice has produced another stunner.

There are bands who should never touch the idea of a concept- Green Day, for example. However, there are bands who can, and should utilise the niché. Thrice's Alchemy Index looks to prove the formerly post-hardcore, now somewhat genre hopping giants, are firmly part of the second category. Fire correlates more with previous albums like Illusion of Safety, with a strong heavy element running through it. Water, by way of contrast, is like a more angular, and more rewarding Vheissu, with Thrice's relatively new-found lightness providing the tone. Thrice have a tough act to follow with the second Alchemy Index set, as this one is pretty damn near perfect

Thrice manages to craft another strong album, this time delving even further into the progressive trail that the band had begun to show on Vheissu. The Fire disc shares the sounds most familiar to Thrice fans, a heavy, spastic side that never lets up. It stays closer to the image that Thrice has created for themselves, yet still manages to push some boundaries with songs like The Flame Deluge, The Messenger, and Backdraft. The strong fire atmosphere that these tracks create make it seem as if the songs could show up in a movie, particularly The Flame Deluge. Burn The Fleet is the one that doesn't quite fit in here, being that it is not bone-crushingly heavy, instead going for a more melodious approach. But it is one of the stronger tracks, with Dustin's vocals matching up well with the tasteful guitar riffs. It is the Water disc that shows how Thrice is not afraid to try new sounds, opting for a strong electronica approach, the band perfectly succeeds in a ocean-like approach. The change from the watery song off of Vheissu, Atlantic, to tracks like Lost Continent and The Whaler show just how much this band can progress. Dustin's softer singing and the well-executed keyboards surround every song with a feeling that this is all taking place out at sea. Kings Upon The Main does it job even more by creating an underwater feel. Overall, The Alchemy Index is not disappointing, and Volumes III and IV will hope to keep up the pace.

From the heavier, aggressive sounds of the Fire EP to the electronic and somber tones of the Water EP, Thrice put out a more experimental side to them while still keeping it a record that is wholly a Thrice album. Sonically, lyrically, and thematically the band nails the concept of this project. Together with Volumes III and IV this is some of Thrice's most conceptually creative work.

The Alchemy Index could be said to be a perfect concept series. Each album has the band going in different directions and experimenting while still maintaining a signature unmistakable "Thrice" sound. With 'Fire' Thrice try out a heavier and more aggressive, solidly post-hardcore sound (which they perform phenomenally I might add). 'Water' however is much more mellow with Thrice skirting the post-rock and ambient genres at times. Fire: 4.2/5, Water: 3.9/5

One of my favourite albums of all time. I used to listen to this album every morning before i went to work and still never got bored. It's one of those albums which deserves more recognition then it gets.

I despise this album... in fact, the whole concept is whack. You may say: "But, you gave "Artist in the Ambulance" a 4 and "Vheissu" a 4.5!!! What are you smoking?" First, that is none of your business, second, I hate seeing one of my favorite bands take a gimmick too far. I am serious when I say that the 'Fire' disc is one of the most pathetic attempts at music ever put to tape by a super talented band. Everything on the disc has been done before and better, not to mention with more creativity. The 'Water' disc is a resonable affair; Thrice seems more at home in the slower genre these days (A sad thing in my opinion). I rated this disc as low as I did because of how horrible the 'Fire' disc is... it is nearly unlistenable. The water disc floats, but you will be slowly rocked to sleep. Why did this have to happen to Thrice? While 'Vheissu' was a brilliant experimental hardcore trip 'The Alchemy Index' borrows heavily from past releases and eventually quashs any attempt at progressing their sound. Skip this lame duck.

Light 3.5 - Underwhelming fire and phenomenal water.rThrices most experimental album to date, sadly not all of it is amazing. Fire - distortion, noise, screamingrWater - ambience, post rock, dreams, icy beats, beauty. Album opens up with ,,Firebreather'' great distorted song, that is perfect example of what the Fire should sound like, with its unorthodox riff and noisey atmosphere. Sadly ,,Messenger'' is underwhelming, ,,Backdraft'' - is overly distorted and fails to accomplish anything and ,,The arsonist'' is my least favorite thrice song to date, with crappy nu-metal edge to it, I really think the song is awful. Thankfully ,,Burn the fleet'' is great and catchy song and ,,The flame deluge'' is phenomenal ender, so noisey and distorted. Thankfully the water is thrice at its best opening with ,,Digital sea'' and ,,Open Water'' beautiful catchy dreamy songs ,,Lost continent'' is another adventurous ambient piece ,,Night diving'' thrice goes ISIS, phenomenal and the album ends at its best with ,,King upon the main'' Dustin sounds so amazing dreamy and acomplished on this one, I keep getting goosebumps.

The first part of Thrice's ambitious series of concept records. The band released 4 EPs, each themed after one of the four elements (fire, water, earth, and air), and then released two full lengths with two EPs on each. The series is Thrice's masterwork; this, the first two volumes, are phenomenal collections of versatile songwriting. The fire half features odd-time signatured rock tunes, and the water half ambient, electronic, mellow tracks. Highlights include the anger and aggression of "The Flame Deluge," and the beautiful melodies in "Lost Continent" and "The Whaler." This is a brave, and superb, collection of music.

Thice does a little experimenting with their sound with The Alchemy Index Vols. I and II. Vol I (Fire) is gritty and heavy, like fire. While Vol I is probably one of my least favorite releases by Thrice, they make it up with Vol. II (Water). Water is very calming, peaceful, and relaxing. It also features soft electronic vibes. In my opinion, Water is the best of all of the Alchemy Indexes.

The first half of a highly anticipated concept project linking the four elements of the universe into 4 discs leaves no dissapointments.
Fire and Water perfectly compliment each other so perfectly that it doesnt lack any elements (no pun intended) - it has both sides of hardcore and electronic soothing music to keep you interested throughout.
Fire rages in with power and hardly ceases to stop - the music really serves the element for what it truly is: an unstoppable destructive raging force.
Although a couple of tracks of the water disc could have been produced better, water dowses the first half into a soothing digital stream of sweet music that ends with a strong note.

I gave this a 4 because of the "Water" disc. In my opinion it was superb, using a range of influences and good lyricism to craft something unique that actiually worked with the concept. On the other hand though, the "Fire" disc probably should have been called Fire-Fighting or something like that, because this was some of the most watered down "hardcore" I've ever heard. They showed us with the "Illusion of Safety" that they were capable of so much more in the punk/hardcore genre. Unfortunately, as with "Vheissu", they seem to have drowned there talents in uncreative simplicty to accomadate a more mainstream audience.
Luckily, there was enough potency in "Water" to rescue the album as a whole...

It's quite incredible how this band managed to pull off incorporating the components accurately with the assigned element.
Fire has an excellent, raw, hard rock sound that sometimes called for more aggressive vocals than we've ever seen from Dustin.
Water sounds like something that could be off Vheissu.
Very soothing, enjoyable record as well.
Sometimes, I think 'Red Sky' should be randomly put on Water.
No one would know the difference.
The most original release by one of the greatest rock bands of our time.
Buy it, kids.

What I like about this album is that the songs individually are really good, but the album as a whole works together perfectly, and is very good, as well. Also, I don't know if it was just the store I bought The Alchemy Index at, but it was $10 for both discs! That's reason enough to get this album!

The Alchemy Index is one of my favorite albums. I love Thrice's innovative ideas. They are always trying new, amazing things with their sound. I find the water portion of this album to be the most outstanding. The lyrics are beautiful (they've got a splendid vocabulary) and poetic (particularly Open Water, my favorite song, by the way). The effects are also astounding. Each song pulls you into an entirely different universe and shows you something you've never seen or heard before. This album is original, poetic, and brilliant.
