On Put Your Back N 2 It, Hadreas endured hell and placed his scars under a spotlight. On No Shape, they burn not with pain, but with love. A miraculous record in every sense of the word.

It's like a haunted and troubled celebration of the scars in his life. I love this revealing and exposed type of music; it's almost more troubling than beautiful.

No Shape is an artsy, minimal, ambient Pop album that traverses a soft, ethereal atmosphere with sentimental and introspective lyrics from singer-songwriter Mike Hadreas. Despite coming off as soft and even lonely, this is no way a negative thing, Perfume Genius utilizes strings in many situations to create anxious, melancholy or wandering moods with guitars, synths, pianos and bass as accents. The instruments are certainly secondary to the inspiring performance of Hadreas whose tone and execution display passion and are bound to evoke a range of emotions in any listener. Throw in a great Weyes Blood guest spot with the wonderful vocals and production and No Shape quickly becomes one of the more memorable albums in the first half of 2017. Wreath is a fantastic track but unfortunately the album flutters out a bit after this with the average track quality being rather front-loaded.

Hadreas is still a wounded warbler that's capable of awing emotionally and atmospherically, defiant with his formidable blares and seductive sashaying. And it's revitalizin' to hear him reduce the industrialized edge+dark doom and go poppier, prettier, looser; glimmers of cheer and warm harmonies and acoustic strummin' welcome sun versus the sparse and solemnities. Arrangements are curious and cragged enough to make Weyes Blood's traditional croon-contrib sound very out of place. If only that along with the rest of the second half didn't kinda just flatly float on by when compared to the first.

hadreas continues to get better with each project, with no shape being his best effort to date. it's not just about how he carries the concept with no missteps, but also about how he uses subtelty and you tenderness to unfold each story and how different rythms (or the lack of them during the slower moments) play a huge role at that too. one of the best pop efforts of the year so far. 4+

Mike Hadreas is a genius, as is Blake Mills (who is fast approaching God-tier as a producer between this, Alabama Shakes, and Laura Marling). My only complaints are that "Wreath" goes on for about a minute too long, and "Sides" is a bit busy, but both are still some of my favorite songs on the album.
