3.0 good | butcherboy | June 16th 17 | These songs make amazing playlist additions.. but as a cohesive album, it's so monotonously unvaried, that it's a slog to sit through it.. again though, individually, there isn't really a weak track here..

5.0 classic | Lucman | February 26th 18 | There is nothing like turning out the lights, opening the blinds so you can see the town lights in rthe distance, and softly jamming this record before going to bed. It's nearly euphoric.

3.0 good | Erwann S. STAFF | November 7th 22 | A suite of similar dream poppy slowcore tunes, this s/t from Cigarettes After Sex basically asks you if you dig their 3 ideas. If you do, hurray: you'll like this. If you're lukewarm to 'em, well you'll be slightly bored.

4.5 superb | FlipTrackz | June 16th 17 | The soundtrack to waking up the morning after, rolling over and seeing her sleep while the sun creeps in through your window shining right on her face.

4.0 excellent | Alabaster Jones | June 11th 17 | There are a lot of albums out there where each individual song on it has little to no variation with any of the other songs; as in, you could shuffle up the tracklist and the record would flow more or less the same. These types of albums can be truly great if each song is fantastic and the atmosphere derived from them is strong. Cigarettes After Sex certainly meets those criterion, as each and every song here is a mesmerizing dive into a hazy dreamworld of affectionate feelings and moments, and the atmosphere is as addictive as nicotine. It's hard to say the lack of variation harms things as it keeps the atmosphere rigidly consistent, but if they were able to find a way to keep the atmosphere strong while adding more variation to the ambient pop/slowcore formula they've dug into, it could be a modern classic. That said, this is still a wonderfully engrossing listen, and it's own nature renders it ready to be listened to at any point in its tracklisting.

3.0 good | Jots EMERITUS | June 9th 17 | I second Eliot's points, but this would be a near-masterpiece if Gonzales was able to accomplish what he does while also utilizing more variation in terms of songwriting. it has great pick-up-and-play appeal, and it's remarkable how far CAS can take their formula, but there isn't much I can say about one song that I can't say about another. which is good, but limits the album to just being merely good.

4.0 excellent | judasgoat | June 8th 17 | With their self-titled debut, Cigarettes After Sex have made an official entrance onto the scene with a fully formed sound, almost to a fault. Structure-wise, the album can get repetitive. But it's easy to forgive when the melodies are this nice and the atmosphere is this well executed. When those elements really come together, like they do on the arresting Flash and glacial album highlight Opera House, you can hear the world of potential the group has.
Greg Gonzalez has developed quite a knack for expressing a deep romantic longing without sounding cloying or relying on cliches (as K. and Each Time You Fall in Love can attest) and that longing blends seamlessly with the music, thanks to his smooth vocals. Yes, it can be repetitive, but it's also memorable, idiosyncratic, and a perfect example of sustaining a mood throughout a full-length album. Very promising indeed.

2.0 poor | BrushedRed | May 31st 17 | A gorgeous, yet exhausting and repetitive listen. I feel so disappointed in a way, but we'll see how I feel upon further listens. "Opera House," "Flash," and "Truly" stand out as highlights, but the rest of it might as well be "K." on loop. It's the aural equivalent of too much of a good thing. If Cigarettes After Sex would take their signature sound and evolve a little and throw us some neat little curves here and there while retaining their beloved sound, I feel I'd like this more. Instead they rest on their laurels to the point of nausea. A track here and there is amazing, but it's painful to make it through the whole album in a single sitting.
