I miss their heavier metal side on this album.. there honestly isn't any metal (heavy) moment on
the whole album (well, ok one song - Mirage - has some heavier sections) + gone are any harsh
vocals .. I mean this is a good progressive rock album, but
in my opinion it's their weakest yet

Every bit as dynamic as it is atmospheric, Malina is an album that's difficult to pinpoint and describe, but never fails to leave a lasting impression. Definitely one of 2017's highlights.

Leprous is a Norwegian progressive metal band formed in 2001 in Notodden, Norway. They originally made their mark as Ihsahn?s (Emperor vocalist/guitarist) backing band in live situations. Don?t let that mislead you, though, because Leprous don?t play progressive black metal. Their first four albums could broadly be categorized as the kind of quirky progressive metal that only seems to come from Norway, but even that doesn?t describe Malina. On Malina, Leprous has dropped any pretense of simply being a progressive metal band and opened their sound to elements only hinted at before ? mainly electronic music. It shouldn?t surprise fans of the band that this has finally happened considering the band count Radiohead, Massive Attack, and The Prodigy among more standard influences such as Porcupine Tree and The Dillinger Escape Plan.

Leprous (almost) completely abandon their heavier side for a more moody and ambient sound. It may be a bit disappointing for fans of their earlier work, but the album is still loaded with gorgeous moments, particularly in the second half.

Leprous has evolved from album to album, as any good artist should, but on Malina they find themselves sacrificing some of what made them truly amazing in the past in search for simpler, and sometimes superior songwriting. Making progressive music that is approachable and enjoyable to a wider audience is about as difficult as it gets; what prog elements do you keep and what stays? The songwriting, vocals and production are the strongest things about Malina. Leprous present some extremely catchy tunes with excellent melodies and production that accentuates those elements. Einar shines, but when hasn't he and where would Leprous be without him? The main problem with Malina is that Leprous downgrade their instrumentation in search of this new style. Yes, the songs are still using uncommon rhythms and generally proggy but Leprous are as simple as ever and it shows. In the past one could chew apart every Leprous song and find seemingly infinite material moment to moment in the instrumentation to boast about. Here that aspect is gone and revisiting the album is more for the melodies and hooks rather than listening to a vitruosic-but-not-wanky drum/bass/vocal/guitar exhibition at any moment. Leprous have done well here but there is no doubt this is their weakest major release.

A clear and well needed departure to their sound. Definitely not their most visceral release but so far the songwriting seems excellent in the areas that The Congregation suffered in.
