Fifteen studio albums in, Paradise Lost show no signs of slowing down, with Medusa being noticeably one of the darkest albums of the latter portion of their career.

I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I think Paradise Lost have moved too far back towards their roots. The band were always at their best when they were doing something other than straight-up doom. Whether it was the metal infused doom of Icon and Draconian Times, or the elctronic tinged works starting with Symbol of Life. To me, this is just too bland compared to what they've proven they can do.

The Plague Within was diverse, perhaps too diverse for its own good in the long run, which may explain the Yorkshire natives' decision to answer to the pun intended by the track "Beneath Broken Earth", and expand its early '90s death/doom throwback for the needs of a whole album. Medusa lives and breathes through the minimalism echoed by the pioneering death/doom metal outfits (old My Dying Bride EPs come to mind), whereas Mackintosh's deliberations with (now defunct) Vallenfyre have infiltrated Paradise Lost anno 2017, in terms of riffs and sound. Still, the bare bones approach, while it appears to work for the album as a whole, hinders the delegation of really strong moments.

Without a doubt, Medusa is at its best when it is carrying a hooky melody. Unfortunately, more often than not, it doesn't have one.
