Anthony Gonzalez, the brainchild behind electronica group M83, has always had a fetish for taking discarded, old sounds and turning them into something new. The group’s shoegaze approach to electronica, soothing sounds built atop waves and waves of sound and layers of production, are twisted into M83’s most accessible outing on Saturdays=Youth, a record that hearkens back to that cultural touchstone everyone wants to forget: the ‘80s! Lyrically focused on teen love and emo angst, the music is a blend of synthtastic new-wave pop and frothy, bubbling techno all buoying Gonzalez’s wispy voice. It would’ve made a hell of a soundtrack to the Breakfast Club.

As convincing as the upbeat feel and dreamy atmosphere are, this album suffers from being same-y and drawn-out. There are some beautiful songs, but also some stuff that is trite and unjustifiable in length, most notably Up!, which ranks among the worst tracks in M83's catalogue. That said, it's notable for doing something well that often bothers me: Ending with an extended 10-minute ambient outro makes so much sense as a last, nostalgic goodbye to being young and fits the album?s concept well. - 6.0

Saturdays = Youth occupies a pretty average and underwhelming spot in the middle of the road between the more lo-fi, shoegazy drama of Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts, and the epic, arena-ready synthpop jubilation of Hurry Up, We're Dreaming.

Saturdays=Youth is 80s reminisce captured in bubbling electronic form. Whether it be the John Hughes film chorus of "Kim and Jessie" or the electric-meets falsetto anthem that is "We Own The Sky," m83 prove that they may be reviving the antique, but they are still relevant.

stuck between a 3.5 and 4. first of all, you have to be in the right mood to listen to this album. the synthpop sound can get very grating. the dreamy, ethereal sound can get bland. the instrumentation sometimes may appear to be the same on every song.
But those are rare cases. When in the right mood, the musical intensity is a blast and you can just lie back and live through the 80s all over again.
