The focus is on Ant and Slug’s gritty, industrial-colored lyrics and simple, rhythmic flow, telling black-and-white stories of crime, drugs, the projects, and any number of other things that influenced the two as they grew up in Minneapolis. “Dreamer” brings out the woodwinds and horns in a catchy fable about teen pregnancy while “The Waitress” wallows in funky bass and a bird-like flute while it unweaves a story about its subject. While occasionally the duo’s unremarkable voices tend to blur together and the lyrical matter is unrelenting, the ingenious production keeps things from going stale.
Neither is as technically talented as rappers like Nas or Twista, neither boasts the advanced studio wizardry of producers like Kanye West or Timbaland, and neither indulges in gangster posing like Young Jeezy or 50 Cent, but Atmosphere’s unique combination of realism and straight-to-the-point beats makes their latest another gem in a long line of excellent underground releases.

Absolutely gorgeous album. While some tracks show a different Slug than we've seen in previous years, the outcome was beautiful. Much better than most of their EPs, and "Yesterday" has become one of my all time favorite songs.

the album that taught me that hip-hop wasn't all about bitches and bling bling. these songs are real, dark, personal, and tear-jerking. must-have for the nonbelievers. and i don't think i'd be exaggerating when i say Slug is the best white rapper making albums post-Eminem Show.

A shining example of GREAT hip-hop, and it's by a white dude. Love it. Every track is heartfelt and superbly written in terms of lyrics, I think the only thing that keeps this from a 5 for me is that some of the beats are just....well, lazy.

What I think makes this stand out in front of other Atmosphere albums is the sure focus on the music. There's a nice and very fitting range of instruments used throughout, which always suit the songs they're used in so well. But also lyrically, this album is outstanding, and I've never found another record as engaging as this is. I made the effort to go into town to buy this one, which I never regretted as there are very few albums I've enjoyed more.

This album is good.That is about as simple as I can put it. It has it's share of great tracks and songwriting and although it is generally solid throughout, it is honestly difficult to make it through a listening of the entire album. Many of the tracks or just flab on what could have been a great album. Sometimes songs are slow to a fault, not being catchy or inspiring in a slow aspect but seem rather drawn-out. Now those are the negative aspects of what is otherwise a good album "Shoulda Known" "You" "Like the Rest of Us" are all great but some variety and trimming down the album by throwing away a couple tracks would not have hurt.

Full of truly great lyrics and an almost Jay-z-esque delivery, "When Life Gives you Lemons..." is a surprisingly chill record, full of great ideas but ultimately not as upbeat as hoped for. Some rhyme schemes recycled, some choruses sound similar, and some beats are just.. ugly; but Atmosphere has a mission and a voice and it shines through the downsides. This may not be the greatest rap record out, but at least there is meaning and importance in it. I wish there were 'kudos' points on this site, because Atmosphere deserves respect, so give it. Support these guys!

I have loved atmosphere for adges now and i love the fact that each album apart from maybe lucy ford and god loves ugly has a complete diffrent change in style or maybe thats just me.
This is probablly one of the biggest changes i would say, dont get me wrong You Can't Imagine How Much Fun Were Having was a massive step but compare that to this? i think its massivly diffrent love it though Ant is one of the best prouducers out there and Slug? well what can you say about him. The man is a genious no doubt.
