Queen of Time largely follows in its predecessors footsteps, making the folk and orchestral elements feel even more integral to the music. Where most bands struggle to walk that fine line between folk and metal, Amorphis glide upon it with grace and finesse, resulting in an album that not only does its predecessor justice, but builds upon its already solid foundation to become something that may possibly edge over it.

Tuonela and Elegy are two of my favorite Amorphis albums, but after so many years it seemed like the band were never going to come back to that sound. Then they released Queen of Time. Queen of Time sounds like what Tuonela might have sounded like if Amorphis had kept the death metal vocals and totally upped the intensity. To me, Queen of Time feels like the most aggressive and progressive album of Amorphis’ career. The album still maintains the progressive death metal formula of the previous few releases, but the actual ‘progressive’ part, as well as the melodies, feel like they owe more to the Tuonela-era than anything current. That means the melodies are insanely catchy, as are the choruses, and the prog has more of that old-school folky Amorphis feel than anything they’ve done lately. The album is also very diverse in its moods and tempos which gives each song its own space. After the past few years, Queen of Time has become my favorite Amorphis release.

28 years since their inception and Amorphis simply decides to drop quite possibly the best and most complete album of their entiere career. Folk, orchestral elements and progressive metal blend together into a breathtaking mix. The vocals, the instrumentalization, the production values are all fantastic. Seriously how many bands can make such haunting and quality music this late in their run? These Finns are easily the most undervalued masters of the metal genre.

I loved their last release, but this is the first newer Amorphis record I've listened to that challenges Tales From a Thousand Lakes in quality, and it easily trumps Silent Waters as their best modern output. Vocals are top notch, instrumentation is beautiful and the songwriting has a few surprises hidden in it. One of the best metal albums of the year, possibly even the best.

Ebic m/ Of course the cheese is present - that second track is typical Eurovision metal - but it's rather good cheese. Some lil elements distinguish this one from other symphoprogfolk releases, like the sax on "Daughter of Hate". Still, this aesthetic is too cheesy epic for me, especially during an entire hour.

Lengthy but rewarding listen. A super creative and exciting album, which is definitely requires several listens to fully digest, but not due to the heaviness! Adventurous, and you simply can't get enough of Tomi's brilliant vocal performance.

These guys just can't disappoint. On first listen, this one felt kinda safe and as if it played too much into the band's comfort zone. However, Queen of Time is dense and rich, combining seamlessly multiple layers and elements. The songwriting is as solid as ever and the melodies are once again excellent. Makes you look forward to their next LP.

Good melodeath with powerful growls and excellent clean singing but without anything particularly interesting. Riffing is very tight although nothing groundbreaking and sometimes it seems like they are out of ideas. I feel like the album suffers form excessive lenght and utilizing the same ideas over and over.

This album simply feels like Under the Red Cloud II but it lacks the great hooks, soul and melodies that Amorphis was able to find on their previous release. Amorphis reach into their old bag of tricks with layers of folk and symphony pasted onto melo death metal rhythms and Queen of Time presents 10 songs that all basically follow the same formula that the band did well with previously but here the songs are just not as memorable. The Bee, Daughter of Hate and Amongst Stars are standouts but on the whole the album just lacks a soul and variation.

I don't understand all the criticisms and positive comments about Amorphis latest work. "Queen of Time" seems like any symphonic work that uses Death Metal as a backdrop. There is nothing to be celebrated here, it is always the same gooey and super produced sound. The impact is nonexistent, and the urge to sleep overwhelmed me at the moment i listened to this record. I don't have a hatred for this aspect of Death Metal, but it seems that nothing creative or entertaining comes out from here.
