I don't like this one bit. But then, that may have been what the band was going for. It's ugly, grimy, angry, and dirty in a way that sticks with you long after. It's a disgusting portrait of evil that we often forget exists.

78/100. Doesn't hold a candle to Soundtracks, but then again that's a pretty impossible standard. Every second of the LP's 38 minute runtime oozes with dread and beats the listener with an unrelenting sense of brutality. Surprisingly accessible too (for Swans lol).

Only their first album, and enjoy what I'm hearing. Lyrics came a little short-handed, but the sound of this band has the industrial quality that NIN could only dream of. I'm excited how much better their other albums can be. 2/26/16 - Coming back to hear this as one of the few albums I would consider a borderline 3.5/4 rating due to how (historically) impacting this album has become. The faults remain the same, but this was considerably a stepping stone for future industrial-genre artists.

Audible horror and dystopia were clearly made for one another, as was Michael Gira and Swans' debut studio album Filth. Though only supplied with 9 tracks in all, its strength in quality is far more than this number alone, as the percussion is foreboding enough to compliment Gira's malevolent, rebellious shouts. Unlike anything such as The Seer, this release needs no 32-minute epic to justify where it stands in this band's career; the production values and the minimalistic terror already kick things into absolute gear.

Album titles usually have one job: describe the music. "Filth" does this job perfectly, Swans' first album is one of the most dirty, nasty, evil, noisy, unapologetic, and downright disgusting albums ever recorded, and let me tell you this: it is AWESOME. The bass is heavy and hypnotic, layered with the shrieks and squeals of Norman Westberg's cringy yet awe-worthy guitar, backed with superb metallic percussion and drums, finally frosted with the yelps of Michael Gira himself, who reeks of absolute hatred here. The only bad songs here would be the minute-long filler track "Freak" and the painfully boring "Gang". 4.7/5

Filth is a quintessential album for the Swan world, as it represents some of their most destructive musicianship. With rhythms sounding like an industrial factory out back, melodies submerged in a gory atmosphere, and vocals howled or growled, this is an absolute chaotic beast of a record. I would strongly recommend this to anyone that likes heavy albums, because this is it.

The most brutal album I've ever heard, It's like the sound equivalent to getting raped, whipped, and tortured in a dungeon. Fucking Beautiful. The instrumentation is really interesting too. Especially the drums. There are a lot of original drum patterns and it's pretty catchy overall in a fucked up kind of way. One downside though, is that I can't handle it for too long. I only spin this when I'm really in the mood for something really intense. Also, this is the only swans album I've heard all the way through and I've read that their next few albums are just as, or even more brutal than this. Yay!
