4.0 excellent | TheManMachine | August 3rd 18 | Important lesson learned: never underestimate tuba as a bad-ass bass replacement in a jazz quartet; the remaining three players in this case being saxophonist and a pair of percussionists. Together they'll take ya on a trip on every tune but shun getting too airy or long-winded, collectively let 'er rip at times but stop short of mad squawkin' and tumult. Their forte is fiery directness; power and rhythm. Dips into the slower+softer aren't quite as successful but make for some fruitful breathers, and having a knack for swampy reggae cert don't hurt. And whereas we get lizardry, all their Queens are powerful black women -- see bookended voxers for some scarily relatable thoughts on the issue -- "Fuck the fascists, end of story / Fuck em all, fuck em truly", "Don't wanna hear that racist claptrap / Anybody chat that crap get clapped back / Don't wanna take my country back mate / I wanna take my country forward."

3.5 great | Bedex | June 25th 22 | I agree with the general sentiment that this is the best SoK album (so far), but as ever with SoK whilst it feels cool and well crafted I also struggle to think of it as music I'd voluntarily jam on the regular. I think I just don't like the way they use the ?tuba. It all starts great though, wiht 1 being really cool and class with its vocals but also fun as hell with its infectious rhythm, transitioning smoothly into the perhaps not as jammy but still cool 2 which prolongs it all. The good transitions continue with the super dancey again 3, and frankly with that first trio I was quite convinced. 3 ends abruptly which is fine as 4 gives us much deserved rest. But then 5 takes us back to the SoK I don't like so much. The drums are dancy and all, but it feels like they are having a whole lot more fun than I am. 6 goes back to a relaxed mood which is nice, but the low ended prrrewprrew prrew prewwww are still breaking things for me when they are present if I'm honest. 7 is alright and kinda fun, 8 is dancier again, 9 brings back the cool vocals, and there is a conclusion to note but it focuses on the prrr prrr which again doesnt do much for me. 3.6

4.1 excellent | Erwann S. STAFF | February 7th 20 | Super energetic and funky tuba-led Afro-Jazz. If the tuba is the big deal here (think of it as a wind bass), Shabaka always come up with groovy sax lines, and the two percussionists acutely provide tribal rhythms. This juxtaposition of instruments leads to an infectious polyphony of sounds and voices. The London jazz scene is pretty much the shit these days, and having in Shabaka an artist present in many recent jazz darlings (eg The Comet Is Coming) only help cementing the city as a frontrunner. The furtive yet deeply rooted racial commentaries ("heyo Elizabeth you but a snake and you don't represent neither our people nor our culture") helps making this a true Afro-Jazz record, one that understood both its British colonialist monarchy and jazz's zeitgeist.
