4.0 excellent | Trey STAFF | August 22nd 18 | The Wake is the album that almost never happened. The band’s guitarist (and main songwriter) of twenty-three years died of Cancer in 2005, which left the remaining members with a pretty tough decision. They could either call it quits or try to get another guitarist/songwriter with the same unique flair and technique that made their original guitarist so special. They went with the second option and released Target Earth. While Target Earth was pretty great, it wasn’t until The Wake that their new guitarist, Daniel Mongrain, came into his own. The Wake is the album that really brought Voivod back to the era of Dimension: Hatross, Nothingface, and even The Outer Limits. The Wake is full of the atonal riffs, breakneck tempo changes, and thrashy tempos that made this band so great in the 80s. Seamless blend of Dimension: Hatross and The Outer Limits with random moments of Nothingface. I hear very little modern Voivod in this, and that's just fine with me.

4.0 excellent | TheManMachine | December 12th 18 | Ardent tellers of technological terrors that they are, perhaps Voivod saw the present as a particularly opportune time to give a record some extra oomph. Haven't heard anything past 89's Nothingface personally tho, so maybe that's presumption. But an album of this caliber this far downstream is a triumph; don't hurt that it also makes impending doom kind of a blast and effortlessly encompasses their mastery. An exercise in tightness+tone+chemistry that still riiiips, riffsriffsriffsriffs, prog with punch, dorky but persuasive, bassbassbass, oft funny (likely unintentional), drummer that's been there since 82. Theatrical in that its machine steam spurts and walkie-talkies and space drone put you precisely on location and it ends with minutes of nothin' but a dramatic violin duel; but it's their thrash and snarl technique making me a believer. Plus I swear I've battled an NES boss to the beginning riff from "Event Horizon". Distich most worth revisiting on 12-minute repriser-finale: "It's scary / it's crazy".

3.6 great | Voivod STAFF | October 7th 18 | Prior to the release of The Wake, it was made known that the new material would set anew its foot into various styles originally founded by the band, focusing more on the prog era. There's no denying that the new album does that in a way that's adequately convincing and entertaining, but also prevalent is the notion that something is lost during the song writing process. Prog parts are progging, though effect/arrangement-wise, they are nowhere near the summits trodden during Voivod's prog era; thrashier parts are thrashing, but unlike their prog counterparts, they lose some traction within the proggier arrangements and/or the expertly clean and atmospheric sound work; The latter, an enhancement as to how Snake's vocals were laid down in Target Earth, does an excellent job in highlighting the superb aging of his voice. Favorite tracks: Obsolete Beings, Orb Confusion. Stream: http://musicmp3.ru/artist_voivod__album_the-wake.html

4.0 excellent | FirstStrikeIsDeadly | September 28th 18 | Really love how this album pushes out in multiple different directions. There are some fast-paced numbers (Obsolete Beings especially, also Iconspiracy and to a lesser extent Always Moving), but The End of Dormancy and Spherical Perspective have ominous lurching rhythms to them early on that build in intensity, the former pulling off that buildup superbly. Orb Confusion has a punkish excitement to it and a couple thrash riffs, with some badass heavy riffs halfway through. Event Horizon has that tech as fuck opening and overall reminds me of the best tracks off Target Earth. And Sonic Mycelium is, of course, a true prog epic, with lyrical passages of great interest to those familiar with a certain previous prog epic of theirs. Vocals are a little rough sometimes but really this album is their best in 25 years. Great job Voivod.

5.0 classic | ElyGallego | September 21st 18 | Incredible album, I was already expecting something great (like Target Earth), but this is truly excellent, this is easily the best thing they've done since The Outer Limits, maybe even since Nothingface. It's so progressive, so memorable, each song has rpersonality, the jam at the end was a great idea and was even better executed than when rGenesis did it in Trick Of A Tail. Album of the year
