the long album is always a gamble: if it manages to sustain it's weight and convey itself in such a way as to make the duration either necessary or redundant, it's more likely to be brilliant. but if it doesn't...rHolter kind of falls into this trap: it's hard not to admire the bombasticness of the conceit but not only is it bloated but the wrong bits are distended. There's vision and power in economy, and the textures on this album particularly in her oeuvre demand it, which maybe unfairly draw us again to the albums length and breadth: if she can't do in 90 minutes what other musicians of a similar ilk can do in 40, why listen to it all? one forgets that trapped inside the vellum there are countless configurations of better albums, even brilliant ones, but the dermis is so dense it makes it hard to parse. a round-up of everything that makes her great, sure, but a deeply frustrating one.
