it, but I don't really get anything from them in terms of emotional response or something
lame like that. Their side of this split changed that. I know a lot of people will
dislike their side because it's 'pretentious' or whatever, but to my ears it's the best
thing they've ever done.
I'm a huge Envy fan and their side is unsurprisingly awesome and if you don't like this
you're a homo.

2.5 average | Iluvatar | September 26th 08 | This highly awaited split lands to mixed opinions it seems. The Thursday side is highly "experimental" and pushes the electronic/atmospheric side of A City By the Light Divided to greater heights, but besides "An Absurd and Unrealistic Dream of Peace" the songs tend to get a bit full of themselves, with closer "Appeared and Was Gone" being the most pretentious thing Thursday have ever done.
The Envy side is as mixed of a bag, being solid in its own right but adding absolutely nothing to the cannon of Envy. They keep treading old waters, and its starting to become apparent that water is shallower than any of us wanted to admit. "Pure Birth and Loneliness" stands out but when it comes after the borefests that are "An Umbrella Fallen into Fiction" and "Isolation of a Light Source", it's hard to really care.
All in all, a disappointing release from both bands to an extent. Envy prove themselves to be almost irrelevant here, and Thursday despite their best effort still can't reach any sort of real high points. Better luck next time guys.

3.5 great | YouAreMySilence | January 2nd 09 | When I first heard about Thursday and Envy making a Split Ep two thoughts went throught my mind; "this is going to be the most pretentious thing ever or one of the best splits ever released. My assumptions were both kind of right.
Geoff Rickly's lyrisism has always been quite pretentious whether Thursday is signed to Eyeball or Island records, but whether they were intelligent or melodramatic the problem has always been making his voice fit, and, in this case, he succeeds. Whether they decide to take a more Screamo/Emo approach (As He Climbed The Dark Mountain, An Absurd And Unrealistic Dream Of Peace) or a Post Metal/Ambient direction (In Silence, Appeared And Was Gone) their side ties together brilliantly and holds the best material that Thursday has ever written. 4.4
Envy is like Emo's Mark Kozelek, all their songs may not be very distinguishable from eachother but their formula is so fantastic it isn't a big problem, for now.
Envy brings a great mix of heaviness and experimental ambience to make their trademarked dark but dreamy atmosphere. 4.1
