4.0 excellent | Departures | June 29th 19 | Bruh that one track with Mos Def under his new moniker Yasiin Bey and Black Thought from the Roots
is all money baby. Freddie lays down some dope rhymes and fat rhythms that borrow much of his new
production preferences he has been experimenting with in his solo stuff. This album is [insert
fire emoji] man ya cannot stop this duo from razing their contemporaries even with all the
firefighting assets in the world.

3.5 great | charlopiano | July 18th 21 | Even though I could understand how some people would love this album, having listened to it almost immediately after Pinata, I kept comparing the two, and kept being disappointed with this one, because I find Pinata so much better

1.5 very poor | Jared Wegenast | January 14th 21 | Love Madlib, but I can't get behind Gibbs' homophobia. Just my personal feelings around it; rubs me the wrong way and I can't waste my time listening to it/pretending it isn't there.

4.0 excellent | Voivod STAFF | September 17th 19 | If it weren't from the infinite-replay-value "Giannis" single due to its superficial reference to the Greek Freak, I wouldn't come across this album... As a gangsta hip-hop release, the album stands out due to Madlib's ingenious placement of instrumentals/samples/what have you, along with Gibbs' one-dimensional perhaps, yet always gritty delivery. And yeah, guest artists give the album extra points, while the respective tracks - Education, especially - happen to be the best of the lot. Favorite tracks: Palmolive, Giannis, Education. 3.0 good | cjbizzlebizzle | August 29th 19 | The spotlight is way too bright on Freddie Gibbs and his constant flow and treadmill of repetitive lyrical themes makes for an album that starts off with some potential but fizzles out somewhat early. Gibbs has good rap technique but damn does he recycle the same exact topics over and over and over again. The lyrics and rapping are just unrelenting and the beats, while really good in their own right, definitely accentuate this. The beats are technical and make great use of guitars, keys and a wealth of instruments but they often lack a prominent bass or bass drum. This dryness really shoves Gibbs into the forefront and exposes his repetitive style. Honestly, every single guest feature comes off like an oasis of variation and they all outshine the feature rapper here. 'Half Manne, Half Cocaine', 'Palmolive' and 'Crime Pays' live up to the hype but overall it is unclear how people chalk this up as an all-time great rap album.

4.0 excellent | Doublez38 | August 21st 19 | Bandana is not surprisingly a very good album. Everything is excellently produced, and sounds modern even if it's a return to old-fashioned sampling. Anyway, everything Madlib touches becomes gold. Both form an alchemy as breathtaking as ever. But although they have managed to change their formula and offer an unforgettable album, it is far from worth Pinata (and that's normal). It's really a mandatory detour of the year

2.0 poor | Brian Meeth | July 18th 19 | Coming off of the superb Pinata... Bandana doesn’t come close. Freddie sounds alright with some good lines
here and there (also some stinkers) but Madlib must’ve been out of energy in the studio. Beats sound tired,
scattered, unfocused and unimaginative in comparison to his usual form. Freestyle S**t has to be one of the
worst openers this year. I was hoping that was gonna be the only hiccup but the first section of Half Manne was
equally terrible. If this had been released 6 months after pinata it would be acceptable but it has been 5 years,
yikes! “Shit so real gotta use fake names” my god Freddie, genius! You know it’s bad when the best line on the
album comes from a feature. Did however enjoy the snuffalapagus line, killer mike feature and Johnny Sac name
drop. Stand out track was “Crime Pays.”

3.9 excellent | Erwann S. STAFF | July 18th 19 | Fire beats as always with Madlib, but I feel Freddie's not always at his best (eg Half rManne Half Cocaine), and all features destroy him (Killer Mike the GOAT). Still an excellent output, with the jazziest Madlib has been in a long time. Comparing this to Pinata, it's more immediate but less, in lack of a better term, hungry. It's more polished, which makes for damn fine beats, but it loses some of the rawness that made Pinata so good. However, one can't help but be amazed by some of these beats that sound like absolutely nothing else in 2019. It's reminiscing of what Madlib has done in the early 2000s or of the late Dilla. Objectively, this is one of the finest mash up between old school and modern hip hop. Shame it's not these dudes' best album.

4.5 superb | GABEMatic | July 2nd 19 | Cements Gibbs? claim that he can rap over anything. Signature Madlib soul-infused beats that compliment the fantastic guest spots. Mos Def feature is nice as hell

4.0 excellent | chilledpunkrock | June 29th 19 | Great album, as expected. Hearing Madlib's take on a trap beat was pretty interesting and production from front to back is excellent as is Freddie's rapping and lyrics (minus that stupid anti-vaxxer stuff). Overall, if you liked Pinata you'll probably like this, the biggest change is Freddie's delivery being a little more dynamic.
