sounds like a chon album. didn't dislike a single thing, but i don't remember a single thing.

It's cool that they let the bass get a little crazier this time around. Other than that
pretty much nothing stood out to me. They try to throw in some cool production tricks to mix it up but it doesn't help because the songs are fucking boring and all sound the same. I got really pumped at the beginning of spike. That reversed guitar is cool as fuck. Then it just cuts out and becomes the same chon song. Fuck this band

I dig it, I guess. It might come off a bit stale at some points but makes up for it with some catchy riffs on tracks like "Rosewood" and "Peace". "Pitch Dark" is a pretty tricky track that's worth mentioning too, and I think its the prime example of this records mellow tone. All-in-all, it's mostly inoffensive and soothing on the ears, and it's somewhere between 3 and a 3.5 for me.

This year, CHON takes a similar approach as before, but with some added maturity, which isn't a bad thing. Really digging the more acoustic bits like the intro to Pitch Dark.

God, this was a hard rating. I was really hyped for this album, despite Chon's weak outing the last go around. I imagined their self-titled effort would become a perennial summer anthem for me; the strength of their early releases combined with continued musical growth from close buds Polyphia set my expectations sky high. Needless to say, I was pretty shocked when, even after at least a dozen playthroughs within a couple of days, I could barely list three tracks I enjoyed to a decent degree. Though Petal is perhaps one of my favorite Chon songs of all time, the rest of the album largely falls flat due to unmemorable hooks, some uninspired playing, and, most importantly, a lack of fresh ideas. Chon regressed with the self-titled. I hope my boys are okay, and that their next release proves me wrong.

I've been playing music for over 30 years, and I am completely baffled at how poorly received this album has been among reviewers - and especially among talented reviewers who make an excellent case against it. Did everyone draw the "crappy review" straw for this record?? Or am I just listening to a different album than everyone else? On the surface, perhaps with only one listen, there's an argument that can be made that it sounds somewhat homogeneous. Closer, more careful listens reveal that the whole record represents SIGNIFICANT STRIDES FORWARD FOR THE BAND'S COMPOSITION STYLE. They have perfected a means of tightly playing beautiful, laid back, west-coast surf rock in a way that is as virtuous and creativity-infused as an endless Paganini violin solo. The end result is an true *album* that is a pleasure to listen to cover-to-cover. The expanded use of pedals results in all sorts of hidden gems when you turn the volume up. But most importantly: every second features a band that is "in the pocket," fully playing together as a group with a common musical vision in mind. It doesn't sound like the beautiful musings of one or two guitarists with cool ideas and a decent rhythm section backing them up. Rather, it sounds like the *absolute pinnacle* of instrumental rock at the turn of the decade. Don't let all the bad reviews fool you.

Nothing really stood out, it is a pleasent listen and definitely will listen to it a couple more times but the album as a whole feels very repetitive and without purpose. That being saind, these guys sure are talented and I can see people just jamming this for that chill summer vibe.
