1.0 awful | BaselineOOO | January 26th 21 | Just take a look at that stupid smirk.. also those glasses... JESUS, THE GLASSES! Who
does this guy think he is? Laurie Anderson or something? Please fuck off dude and go
make crappy outdated prog music. Disclaimer: I know there comes a time in every British
artist's life when he wants to pretend he's an innovative sex machine of Pop music, but
in the real world (Eastern Europe) we call that midlife crisis! Muse did it (The
Resistance), Coldplay did it too (Mylo Xyloto), I'm also sure David Bowie had his
attempt as well. Sad!

3.0 good | Antonius | December 10th 21 | I have been a fan of Wilson's personal work since The Raven... days and I am always interested to hear each new chapter of his music journey. The Future Bites drifts away from the prog character that Wilson's earlier releases had and instead, builds and re-shapes the pop character of his later albums. It has a contemporary temperament supported mainly by synthesizers and electronic effects which make the album a dancing, synthpop one rather than a traditional Wilson-prog one. Despite being different and unexpected, The Future Bites is a bold album that touches the modern consumer culture and the ravenous appetite for things in a world where an unseen hand dictates our choices for us. Recommendations: "12 Things I Forgot", "Personal Shopper", "Self", "Eminent Sleaze". r

2.5 average | LePsych | January 31st 21 | You can't accuse Steven Wilson of playing it safe with this album as this is very different from what he's been doing since forever, but most of the music in here feel like he's really not playing to his strengths at all. Still too weird to truly be pop, lacking in memorable hooks and song structures. The rare few times where you feel he's sticking to his old roots (12 Things I Forgot is a very blatant example of that), the music becomes so cliched and predictable without any real feeling or mood to it. Self and Eminent Sleaze fail because you can't condemn a hollow society while having your own music be equally hollow. That's akin to someone who's saying dumb things and when confronted about it later on, just go and claim "IT'S SATIRE MAN". Even without the words, the music itself isn't evocative of about anything. It feels like it's just... there. Out of the lot, I like King Ghost, Man of the People, Count of Unease and parts of Personal Shopper. But about everything else in there feel like I wanna skip it instantly.

3.5 great | Deadwing2112 | February 22nd 21 | At 53 years of age, Steven Wilson realizes his pop aficionado under his own name. An unabashed and non apologetic ABBA enthusiast, Wilson has long embraced pop as the yin to his prog yang. No-Man's recent Love You to Bits and Wilson's To The Bone all but inevitably foreshadowed The Future Bites. The opener Unself seemingly serves as a brief acoustic dirge to the minimization of prog guitar riffs while Self launches into full blown pop exploitation. Purists clinging to Deadwing will deride this career direction of course however a live post pandemic performance will prove much of this album's content will seamlessly co-habitat with the set list.

2.0 poor | ALONEAFLAME | February 17th 21 | It seems that Steven Wilson's catalog is now determined by how "shockingly irregular" or edgy it is. Unfortunately this sound has been done before, and much better. At it's best it sounds like catchy, fun indie-pop, like foster the people or some shit, but all the more "deeper" moments just fail to invoke anything in me.

3.5 great | cageofman | February 2nd 21 | When you look past the distractions of electro or lack of guitar you find the song writing is very quintessential SW from the prog epic PShopper (askin to voyage 34) to Count of Unease it really has all the hallmarks of whats always made his music great solo or Ptree.

2.5 average | Erwann S. STAFF | February 1st 21 | It goes in through one ear and directly out through the other. It's well-produced and lush, but nothing here has enough substance for it to pretend to be anything other than pleasant background.

3.5 great | judasgoat | January 31st 21 | This is legitimately the most enjoyable Steven Wilson album in quite some time. Dude lost the plot hard with the prog shit after Raven so it's nice to hear him try something else and have it work this well. I'd almost call King Ghost a career highlight. And yes, I know this is the Porcupine Tree guy.
EDIT: Forgot Raven existed lmao. That one was good.
