Basically as dede said. 1 evokes the style of Celestial Lineage, except with the qualities reversed: here the buildups feel very long and lacking substance, but the explosion comes as a relief. I don't mind that there aren't harsh vocals per se, BUT it feels like they would provide some much needed contrast to the soft vox I find kind of dull here. 2 on the other hand starts without any intro whatsoever into a harsh wall of sound, and whilst it's not unique it does feel good after 1. But the real good bit about this EP, and the reason that I bumped it a point, is the track conclusions. 1's noisy ending comes as a surprise after a relatively tame track and is definitely my favourite part of it, whilst 2 ends in a kinda weird and interesting way too, making both conclusions the most memorable part of this. 3.3

One EP to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them. The first track is WitTR before 2009: deeply atmospheric and includes female vocals. However, what constitutes a true change in sound is the total absence of harsh vocals during that first song, which imo would have brought a counterbalance to the female clean vocals. The second track is in the same vein as Black Cascade: less eerie and focusing on blasting hard, atmoblack style. For a 24-minute EP, this is sufficiently diversified and it remains an interesting synthesis of the band's trajectory, but I will always consider this as more interesting contextually than it is musically.

Beautiful atmospheric black metal, as usual. The ep is probably more focused perhaps in that it shows off the dualism of WitTR's sound, the first song being almost entirely atmosphere and the second more firmly rooted in black metal.

Released in between 2007's Two Hunters and 2009's Black Cascade, this two song EP by American black metal trio Wolves In The Throne Room illustrates the changes the band would go through in the years between the two aforementioned LP's. While the opener "A Looming Resonance" plays out very much like their old work; melodic guitars, blast beats, intermittent clean vocals, and transitions between the quiet and the loud. Closer "Hate Crystal", on the other hand, could've fit into Black Cascade well enough, as it is bare-bones, passionate black metal with ghostly vocals. It's a pretty sweet EP, and it shows the transition of the band better than any other release.
