As much as I liked it, and thought it was good, I don't have much positive to say about the albumrThe production is hit or miss, it's gorgeous on tracks like Tell Me You Love, but really irritating on songs like Gilgamesh or Death Star. The sound is interesting but, Idon't think matches Sufjan's voices every time, which is a shame.rPlus, the album is really long. 1h20. Damn

I appreciate how easily it breezes by despite the runtime. Sufjan isn't delving into this new difficult to define electro-orchestral style head-first, he is carefully crafting his songs to work as well as they possibly could with this new brand of serious-quirky jumble-pop-epic music. That said, the quirks and zany choices often clash with the overall seriousness and theatrical grandeur. And clash they do in an unflattering way. Some production choices can derail a song, some choruses are not as strong as the sound of it would want, some vocal traits turn a serious moment laughable and often the biggest impact is left by the most subtle and straightforward of tracks. So the album is a mix of beautifully mastered wild pieces and also musical free-for-alls that feel like a few cans of paint spilled into an ugly mess.

It's too long, songs are too long, but his vocals are more impressive. Feels like he's belting a few times. Could have done without the "Die Happy" song and some of the longer intros/outros. Get to the point!

On the now Upstate New York-based solo artists Sufjan Stevens eighth album he continues sounds and esthetics that he explored on his collaborative 2017 effort ?Planetarium? and earlier this years' ?Aporia?. On his first solo album in five years, Sufjan builds vast and expansive space ambient based soundscapes, in which each track explores an insurmountable number of genres in the experimental electronic field. I could break down each track, but that will ruin the beauty of exploring this album to it?s fullest. This is the closest album I have ever heard to make me feel truly alone, in all the best ways possible. For a whole hour and twenty minutes, you will be taken on a space odyssey exploring topics of blind faith, toxic religion, drug abuse, and death. My only complaint (and this never comes up) is I wish he extended out some of the ambient drones in many of the tracks. Alone they are equally as mesmerizing as the rest of the album. But still, a nearly flawless album and I am absolutely in love with the new direction he is taking.

Sufjan apathetically singing on top of expansive soundscapes. This sounds like Adz's sophistication meets C&L's restraint? Yup, but it mostly got the faults of each of its parent records - ie Adz length problem and C&L's almost too subdued nature. The main problem is, it's dragging like hell. Some Kid A textures are really nice, but they intervene not often enough for the whole album to fully engage the listener. This might sound super harsh, but I'm waiting to be entertained.
