Maybe their best since Slow Riot. Unlike the previous three albums, the ambient tracks feel thematically

they have films play behind them on a screen at their live shows I think, so "widescreen" is probably just a more artsy way of saying "cinematic" which is also what people call certain kinds of pretentious post-rock. so it'll sound like godspeed.

If you love Godspeed, you will absolutely love this (probably). If you?re a post-rock fan you will probably love this (maybe). If you?re a field recording fan you might want to look elsewhere (definitely). For me, this is honestly more interesting than a lot of Godspeeds more bloated releases because of the use of drone and field recording (even some chamber elements here and there). However, this still can drag on at parts and the whole post-rock ballad of ?Job?s Lament? is beyond boring to get through. But still, overall I enjoy a majority of this record and there are still some solid ideas for one of the most legendary art bands to do it.

Well yeah, it's Godspeed You! Black Emperor. This time though, there ain't no drony interludes - replaced here by strings-led interludes - and the band chose to bring more melodies than on all their 2010s releases . When it hits like on "GOVERNMENT CAME", it's hella good of course, but it's still GYBE post-rock 101, and it's not as enthralling as their Holy Trinity. It's aight, competent background-y music that will not interfere with your work - and that's where this one ultimately falls flat, each other releases containing - at least - some moments of pure beauty and/or apocalypse that just forces you to stop what you're doing and enjoy. The overall experience is good - it simply fails to be as heart-stopping as its predecessors.

With the world social and political climate as it is, you figure GY!BE is gonna come out of their Montreal bunker for an album. The title is absolutely silly, but not surprising at all. What IS surprising is that this is easily their best since Allelujah, possibly better than that even.
