3.5 great | Jacob Clark | June 2nd 16 | In continuing some of the more experimental textures from Oh! Gravity., Switchfoot finds a nice balance between them and their previous rock-focused efforts on Hello Hurricane, an album that shows the essence of Switchfoot better than any of their other efforts, even if it is a bit weaker than their best. There's some really solid tracks including "Enough to Let Me Go," the almost two-parter of "Sing It Out" and "Red Eyes," and the eerie yet hopeful title track. Where Switchfoot struggles once again is the ballads. The mid-tempo "Your Love Is a Song" feels incredibly stock even if I feel Jon Foreman's sentiment, while "Yet" is another classic example of the band not going soft enough for the lyrical themes present. They do however nail the other prominent ballad "Always" because of its dynamic nature and Foreman's falsetto delivery early on in the track, as it actually feels like the band was willing to go incredibly soft. Overall, Hello Hurricane is Switchfoot with their heart on their sleeve and a hand on their chest, passionate as ever, if a little formulaic here and there.

1 - Needle and Haystack Life
Wow. What an opener for this album. An extremely catchy chorus that gets stuck in my head all day. The best part is when they switch up the chord progression at the end of the song. Song rating: 5/5
2 - Mess of Me
A little bit on the heavier side, this song is for the true fans. The fans that like songs like "Politicians" and "Lonely Nation". My favorite part of the song is when he kicks it up an octave for the intense bridge. Song rating: 5/5
3 - Your Love Is A Song
Personally, my least favorite song on the album. I think it's a little overrated, and it's not the Switchfoot I know. Best part of the song is probably the quiet acoustic verses. Song rating: 2.5/5
4 - The Sound (John M. Perkins' Blues)
I love this song. Again, for the true fans, but it has a nice, simple guitar riff at the beginning with awesome choruses. Although, I feel as if they wrote this and Mess of Me in the same day, becasue the styles of the songs are very similar. Best part is the end when they go into double time and play the riff. Song rating: 4.5/5
5 - Enough To Let Me Go
Hmm. While each song has its own individual specialty, this one is very light and fun. What sounds like a feelgood song changes with the lyrics. Song rating: 4/5
6 - Out of Control
Yes, I know this song is not on the album. Well you see, that's where you're wrong. It was a bonus track included on the re-release in 2011 on their website, but because it was a special offer, it was taken down. Being my favorite song, I don't understand why they would take it down. But then it was released again on the Hawaii Five-0 soundtrack. Song rating: 5/5
7 - Free
Very similar chord progression to Out of Control. Still a great song, but not my #1. Song rating: 3/5
8 - Hello Hurricane
I love this song. It is one of the best songs on the album. A very defining title track for the album. Song rating: 5/5
9 - Always
Awesome song. I am dissapointed in the remix they released later on, but it is still a good song. Song rating: 4/5
10 - Bullet Soul
Fun fact: This song was originally titled "Your Love Is A Gun". But aside from that, the song has a fun retro rock feel, reminds me of The Strokes or Arctic Monkeys. Song rating: 4.5/5
11 - Yet
Questionable, but still a really well written song. It fits in with songs like "Always" and "Your Love Is A Song". Song rating: 3/5
12 - Sing It Out
I absolutley love the last two songs on this album. "Sing It Out" is a buildup song. It starts off soft, but then builds up to be a very enlightening rock ballad. Song rating: 5/5
13 - Red Eyes
Basically part 2 of 2, with "Sing It Out" as part one. I have to admit, there couldn't be a better closing song. I love the part when he repeats the chorus at the end of the song. Song rating: 5/5
