They are still sick, they are still poor, and they're still dying by the thousands as we look away

Oh man this was a nostalgia voyage. New production is cleaner and you can really hear what the individual
instruments are doing, which is sick, but it definitely lacks the raw bite that made it hit so hard in the first place.
Most of the vocal changes are basically what you’ve heard dude do live on these songs for the last 12 or so
years, for better or for worse.

Love all the little ambient additions in the mix. Drums are 10/10, Riley completely kills it, especially considering
he played basically the same punk beat on every song on the first 3 LPs. Lot of cool shit going on with the bass
as well, which you couldn’t really pick out in the OG mix, aside from maybe the bass line in stare at the sun.
Dustin ranges from absolutely immense to utterly cringe inducing within the album. The most egregious being the
slightly slower “Thrice plays worship music” rendition of the already a little too poppy for my taste title track. I
barely made it through the beginning of that one, but figured i would see the whole record through.

The guest spots are a really cool idea and the selections are very respectable and exciting, but they are limited to
a handful of vocal lines a song; sometimes even only in the background along with Dustin and that seems like a
completely wasted opportunity. Overall, though, this is a very fun trip down memory lane for a very formative
album from my early teens. At the very least check out the new cut of Paper Tigers, it is absolutely insane.

Phenomenal reimagining of a genre classic, they all sound on the top of their game here.

2.5 averageDAVECATAZ | February 16th 23

The vibe is just, off. It?s like they?re covering their own album. The production is way less punchy and the guest vocals are really just filling in on screaming duty since Dustins voice is beaten and bruised. No interesting reimagining of the songs in new ways, nothing added, nothing taken away, a few riffs or vocal melodies have a couple different notes in them, but other than that it?s just a less energetic play-through of their classic album rather than a ?revisit?. Maybe it was a business move to regain some licensing rights or something. Whatever it?s about, I?ll stick with the original.

A lot of re-recordings of classic releases fail to resonate the same way the originals did. They fail to recapture the feeling, atmosphere, and most importantly, the unique features of the era the originals were released in. The Artist in the Ambulance (Revisted) doesn't fail to do any of that. The band has taken this album and somehow helped it to age right along with everyone who originally grew up with it. It's an older crustier version that doesn't always have the same power or youthful energy... it may even be a little worse for wear overall, but there's still something to this. Also, the production here has done wonders for the musical elements. Everything is clearer and the performances have been honed by twenty years of hindsight.

4.0 excellentShattered_Future | February 2nd 23

Guest vocal spots are pretty whack, Dustin sounds a lil tired as opposed to weary on some
tunes, and the new production works about 60ish% of the time. Could've been better.

At the end of the day though, who gives a shit. This is Thrice's best record bar none and I
am absolutely going to throw my back out in the Brooklyn pit for The Abolition of Man along
with every other 30-something who needs one last ride.

This revisit to Artist in the Ambulance was exactly what it should be. It wasn't trying to replace the original but be a reframing of a bygone era. I loved the original, and some songs don't have the same impact in this version. Artist in the Ambulance and Stare at the sun both fell flat to me and didn't capture the same emotion and energy of the original. But Paper Tigers and Under a Killing Moon both stood out. Hearing Dustin scream, "watch the witches burn," gave me chills that the original never did.rOverall I think it was a great interpretation of an old album and I'll keep both in my library.

Bump

5.0 classicKillingMoon | February 2nd 23

I would argue this is better than the original in so many different ways: Vocals, mixing, style, additions as far as features on the album. Maybe I'm being biased but they've had aLOT of time to figure out how to add to the original album that was already great and this is it. Well done.

Bump

4.0 excellentSykx | February 2nd 23

Paper Tigers is the standout here. New production sounds great. Commenters above already nailed it, sounds exactly like they do live in all the best ways. Instrumentals shine here, while the vocal work is generally good it can be a weak point in some spots. I enjoy the guest vocals. This is not trying to be the definitive version of these songs in my opinion, just to celebrate and remember them.r

Listening to this is like reminiscing with an old friend you haven't seen in a while: finding out that while you both may be a little older, a little wiser and have a little more clarity in your worldview, the passion to match the world to the vision in your heads hasn't diminished at all

Bump

Takes an already-great album and makes it all better. What an awesome surprise.

Bump

5.0 classicjmh886 | February 1st 23

Easiest 5 I've ever given. Better than the already classic original. Better production, more mature, better vocals. Every subtle change is perfect. Must listen if you have ever been a fan of the band.

Bump

4.0 excellentMonstar1790 | February 1st 23

While some of the fury is gone (and Dustin's screaming on "Cold Cash" is missed) this refreshing take on a genre classic adds appropriate weariness to the desperate, frustrated, and pleading lyrics that have unfortunately aged all too well.

Bump

4.5 superbtsunamijesus | February 1st 23

Whatever the god-mode of 'no skips' is, I can't stop this before it finishes. It's arresting and immediate and organic. It sounds like it's live, in a good way. This existing is a universal good

Bump

5.0 classicTheSupernatural | February 1st 23

Unironically Thrice's best post-hiatus release thus far. I think this could have done without the guest features, but it's otherwise a perfect reimagining of the original album. They succeeded at capturing the impeccable live sound that they've been using for the past 15 years. Seriously, every single track is noticeably improved over its original.

Bump

4.5 superbAlexTM510 | February 1st 23

Thrice re-do the over compressed and muddy mix of TAITA and give it new life. Instrumentals are given new air to breathe, Riley tweaks some drum parts and Dustin?s aged voice gives the recordings a new sonic depth. As much as this will be a fun nostalgia trip for all the fans who hung around for 20+ years, the songs on TAITA revised stand on their own and will probably make for a standout 2023 post-hardcore release.
