3.5 great | iGuter | September 29th 23 | There is a lot going on that it?s hard to pin down what a lot of people will get a feel for on this record. From metalcore, grunge, industrial metal, and nu metal; there is a lot to take away that either might make fans and newcomers either love, hate or be confused. However, the substance of this record is full of interesting ideas that really feel more innovative than most people want to hear. This new direction is very messy, but still a whole new perspective into how genres can mesh into something new in creative ways.

3.0 good | Mateo Ottie CONTRIBUTOR | October 6th 23 | The weirdest album yet from one of the weirdest bands in metal

2.0 poor | gregorgojira | October 2nd 23 | This is a far cry from the experimental metallic hardcore that this band used to do so well. but this is just... god awful. there's a few bright shining spots like 'Mirror' and 'A Drone Opting Out of The Hive' but most of the album feels like digging into soggy grapes.

2.0 poor | LikeWindOnANipple | June 8th 24 | The Billy Corgan feature sounds like it was written in high school. I have no reason to revisit at least half of these tracks. Best of luck to Code Orange in the future, as I do wish this was cohesive and alluring enough to feel like more than a b sides / local grunge band. I've always thought they have a ton of potential, and I feel that more now, but more because it feels like they're realizing less of their potential and regressing a lil bit to primarily paying homage. Didn't Frontierer use the phrase that holds the Drone song together?

3.5 great | ajcollins15 | October 5th 23 | Code Orange could go down as one of the most hated alternative metal bands in the modern era, and many times I have never quite seen the hate. The band, for the most part, comes out with explosive and energetic metalcore and alternative metal that isn?t too far from the hay-day of these genres. This is especially the case on their newest album ?The Above?, with various heavy alternative metal bangers with various nu metal, metalcore, and even some alternative rock tracks thrown in at various points. Is it going to blow your socks off, absolutely not. But, it does house a lot of classic ideas that we have not seen in a long time and it all comes through with their unique style. Metal heads are just going to hate I think.

3.5 great | artificialbox CONTRIBUTOR | September 30th 23 | I honestly think this is a pretty good follow up to Underneath. They are really leaning into the weirder side of their influences. This is not a concise "___ genre" album, it's more of a scrapbook of interesting ideas from different genres glued together. If you really loved Underneath I think you'll enjoy most of these songs.

2.2 poor | Erwann S. STAFF | September 29th 23 | Code Orange's trajectory continues to be weirder. After going full experimental on 2020's Underneath, they chose to conjure 90s buttrock among their industrial metallic raaaah-ism, and their knack for sing-along choruses can't save how dull these songs are. Long gone is the time they were considered the next big important band.

2.5 average | sanji999 | July 20th 23 | Hardest fall off in punk, Roadrunner killed the band. Wish they went utopia on this album instead we get redneck anthems with no redeeming quality whatsoever. Mirror only worthy song
